Sega originally included Altered Beast as the pack-in game for their Genesis console. That is probably where a lot of you first encountered this game. Others may have first experienced it on a compilation for PlayStation, Xbox, or Steam for PC’s. For those that have no clue what Altered Beast is, it started as an arcade game, anyone remember those? Gameplay dictates the standard movement to the right side of the screen. Enemies appear on both sides and almost immediately commence to attacking you. You have a punch, kick, and jump available for your defense. Good luck.
Fan picks up what Sega dropped
It is no secret that Sega is big on re-releasing games on newer platforms. While this is awesome that they keep their history alive, it would be even better if they did something more. We as fans are often asked to repurchase the exact same game over and over individually or in compilations. As a fan, that sucks. I mean, look at the independent homebrew community, the hacking community, etc. There are tons of fans that are willing to do additional work, correct things in classic games, etc. Why not tap into that support? Instead we get the exact same game repeatedly with a $3 to $8 price tag attached. That is where fans come in, and thankfully Sega has been more understanding than other companies (cough, Square Enix, cough, Nintendo, cough). For the most part, Sega doesn’t shut down projects unless they are charging or are too close to a project officially in development.
Fan edition is original plus more
Pay attention Sega, this is something you need to hear. This fan has recreated the original game with improved boss sprites and such. Not only that, he has also created two new modes to breath new life into Altered Beast. Hard mode features five levels, like the arcade game did, but these are all new with new graphics and enemies to take on. Battle mode has a brand new story about the wizard Neff fleeing to another world. This pits you against the bosses one after the other in your attempt to vanquish the wizard.
Supporting platforms
You can grab Altered Beast by Sega on many platforms. Thanks to eBay and Amazon, you can have a copy in your lap shortly.
