Last seen at the 1997 Electronics Entertainment Expo (E3), SimCopter 64 has been thought to be lost forever. Recently a Reddit user has come into the light with all new gameplay footage of the Maxis title running on real Nintendo 64 hardware. This is interesting considering the age and the platform. Interestingly, the build of the game is late 1997, December 26th late in the month. Other than blocky, what is so interesting? Let’s look.
Development didn’t last long after showing
E3, unless I am mistaken, took place around the middle of the year, June/July area. Considering the build is dated late December 1997 means development did not continue much farther than what was shown to the press. What was unique about SimCopter 64 was how it was planned to integrate with SimCity for the Nintendo 64 (another title that was canceled). SimCity was apparently in development for the Nintendo 64 disk drive, the 64DD. The 64DD never left Japan so that would have hindered International release of SimCopter 64. We must also keep in mind that SimCity 64 was canceled in North America which surely did not help this potential expansion game.
Where to see it in action
You can head over to Reddit, here and here, to interact with user a707northbayer, who released the videos. According to VG247, this version of SimCopter 64 was purchased off Craigslist. The seller “worked in the industry” and sold other items with it. This reminds me of the man that purchased the only publicly available Nintendo PlayStation console prototype (I interviewed him if anyone is interested, I can post the interview here). It was interesting how he obtained it and there was nothing Nintendo or Sony could do about it, other than buy it back. Are you excited to see SimCopter 64 in action? How cool would it be if they dumped it? What other unreleased games can you think of for the Nintendo 64?
