Sub-Zero Mythologies was released in 1997 for the Sony PlayStation and Nintendo 64 consoles. In 2025 fans are porting the game to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), a console that ended commercially in 1994 in North America but not till 2003 in Japan (re-reads that to confirm). What is interesting about this port is how the fans are making it.
More Games Is A Win For Everyone
[NESMaker is a programming suite]( https://www.thenew8bitheroes.com/), including hardware options for the more dedicated game developers. The software side comes with many pre-built templates and engines to help boost home developers into the next stage quickly. That is all great and such but to see someone using this software to make a demake of Sub-Zero Mythologies is mind blowing. It is similar to seeing Asteroids on an Atari 2600 only to then see [MovieCart for the 2600 playing real movies]( https://youtu.be/bDRiJjoN3bc). It is a wild time to be a gamer. https://youtu.be/opE2WYg8o3I
Zub-Zero Mythologies on NES
Surely this is one of those creations that fans probably thought was impossible back in 1997. I know it never crossed my mind that Sub-Zero Mythologies could ever be ported to the NES. Yet, here we are, looking at it in action. I am not a programmer, so I am unsure of just how much the limitations of the NES are impacting what we are seeing. I am sure it is a lot. The main sprite for Sub-Zero is decently animated, so is the Baraka, the only other character shown so far, sprite. Sub-Zero can jump, kick, punch, crouch, etc. So far it looks like they have the basics for him down, a great start, honestly. The backgrounds shown are quite drab but detailed, making use of black quite effectively to create some shading. Check it out, there is no demo available so not much we can do as fans outside showing the developers some support. This is the same developer that did the [Out of This World/Another World to NES]( https://youtu.be/ag7fRh4QmIo) work too.
