Welcome to the Copyright jungle
- ___ I just realized that even if you buy a song, you don't have the right to use it for your video. Yes I was innocent and ignorant. You have to purchase these rights! Right? ___ ___ So there are different type of rights I managed to find: - - Video rights: The ones I needed! It allows you to use the music freely to perform monkey stuff in your own creation, like the video I did - Music rights: With theses, you can then use the music without any restriction, for example in a badass 3 hours long film. (The most expensive) - Television rights: For an use in a TV program, and the price can vary depending the content (I guess they will charge you even more for porn program? Erm...) - Internet rights: I didn't understand the difference, but I think it allows you to use it on your blog for example? They say: Websites, CD-Rom and Software. Clear? - Non-theatre rights: These rights allows you to use the music in a show with your friends, in a festival, in a classroom conference, or any kind of small event. These ones are the cheapest. ;) Original or remix? - Then you have to think if you want the rights of the original song, or if you want to remix or re-record it! Because it's different rights, and a little remix can be cheaper. ;) (But if you have to buy a whole studio, go for the original instead) Whole Song? - You should also know if you want to use the full music or not? 10 seconds? 45 seconds? 1 minutes 13 seconds and 432 milliseconds? If you use just a little part of the music, the right should be cheaper (or let's say less expensive) You could also maybe buy 1 second of the song and loop it forever. Troll detected. ;) Who you production will be destined to? - If you're producing a movie for Hollywood, or just a little movie for you and your loved dog named Rooky, the prices may vary a bit. But you still have to be able to prove it! You're ready for the publishers' chase! - Now you have to find who the hell published this music. You'll have to visit the hundreds of major music publishing companies' websites. (Maybe a google search is easier than searching all the websites, I admit) You'll easily find them by using the tittle, songwriter, ... Contact them! - Send an email, a phone call, a pigeon, some smoke signals, or any communication method the accept. Give them all the information you collected about the use you want to do of this music. Last step: Wait! Forever! - You'll have to be patient. Because it can take between 2-3 months before you get a response. And it will not be always positive. And be aware with the price they ask: You will maybe have to sell your house to buy the rights. So Good Luck, or... - You can also use some copyright free music. I just discovered some marvelous artists that share their music for free. You just have to give them credits in the description of your creation. Enjoy these artists right NOW! Because with the benefit of your help and the promotion you give them, they will maybe be famous soon. And then, their music will be copyrighted too! Thrive, avail! My creation with copyright free music: - ___ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4aOednbhuk ___ Music Credits: Jeremy Zucker - Bout It (ft. Daniel James & Benjamin O) Thanks to them for sharing freely their art! ___
Thank you for reading - watching. See you next time. Hakuna matata!
-
