One of the Chinese New Year customs is to prepare and eat new year cake. The Chinese characters for New Year cake is nian gao (年糕). The nian gao is prepared from the glutinous rice flour. And it is sticky. 

The traditional nian gao is no longer as attractive as in the old days since the people today have accessed to all kind of food and tidbits. However, the pronunciation of the two characters, nian gao, is similar to “yearly  ascension” (年高). It implies “being promoted every year” (年年高升). Indeed, we should not be superstitious and think that eating nian gao is able to help us to be promoted. However, it can be a good reminder and encouragement for us to work diligently for a progressive year. 

华人新年的其中一个习俗乃是准备和吃年糕。年糕是由糯米粉制成並带有粘性。

传统的年糕已经不像过去那样吸引人因为今天的人具有各种食物和花絮。然而，“年糕”的发音类似“年高”，它意味着年年高升。事实上，我们不应该迷信以致相信吃年糕能够帮助我们晋升。然而，它可以作为一个很好的提醒和鼓励，即我们要努力以达到进步的一年。
