 I read a [post](https://hive.blog/hive-140635/@iskafan/what-is-the-first-garden-you-remember-and-what-impact-did-it-have-on-you) by @iskafan with this title and it reminded me of the first vegetable garden I remember. It was my grandfather's. It was at my grandmother's house in Bedford hills where he had moved in, long after their divorce, as permanent house guest. This place is the only place I ever felt was really home, but it is also a place I can never return to for many reasons. My roots to this house run deep and sometimes I still dream of it, although it has been awhile. My grandmother had given him, my grandfather, a room under the roof and a huge parcel of land beyond the swimming pool to make a garden. <div class=pull-left >  </div> It had a white picket fence and here he would toil and coax life and nourishment from the land. The mental image I hold of him in this garden is a calm and happy one. My grandfather was a kind man but also somewhat of a benevolent narcissist. In the garden however he became almost a creature of nature. I can see him in my minds eye next to the sunflowers at the gate, rake in hand a knotted handkerchief on his head to protect him from the sun. My cousin Peter and would sample the bell peppers and tomatoes, the sweet strawberries and watermelon; and because it was in his nature Papa (pronounced Pah Pah ) often would give us a slice of spicy chilli pepper to test our stamina and taste for adventure. I have had gardens before and really want to have one again, if my condition allows it one day. Gardens make me happy they connects me to family and a home long gone. Gardening will always be inseparable from my grandfather and my aunt Bebe (his step daughter) who took up the mantle after Papa was no longer.
