Windows Theory
I have a theory that they are turning Windows into a proprietary version of .NET/Linux from the inside out. In about 5-10 years, they'll probably have it constantly bridged to a SaaS (Software as a Service) and DaaS (Desktop as a Service) via some Azure-powered something or other via mobile devices. Package management will be like Snaps on Ubuntu with required sign-ins, though it may take a while...(https://github.com/microsoft/WSL/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+snap). The desktop environment will be like GNOME since they already have GitHub's (owned by Micro$oft) appointed CEO, Nat Freidman, a former founder of GNOME, to help them. Most "apps" will use commercially licensed versions of Qt when applicable because of some sort of potential patent mumbo-jumbo leftovers (I'm just guessing) from when Micro$oft purchased Nokia (they bought Trolltech and owned Qt for a short while), though I'm not sure about what the QT Company would think (https://www.qt.io/buy-product/); worse case, they'll get bought-out. Imagine a mobile device that ran on an early version ChromeOS but was developed by later IBM (switched from creating computers to service-based company) but in a way no one notices. Meanwhile, they get all of the free labor they want because of the GNU/Linux community. You all know that Canonical is the entire reason this even exists, right? They helped with WSL and supposedly Unity desktop is available for W10 (https://partners.ubuntu.com/microsoft). The funny thing is, Micro$oft's Linux distro is Debian-based instead of Ubuntu.
Oh, and because they own GitHub, they can look at anything, public or private, they want, including any competitors.
