# Antarctic Mecca

On election day, arguably the most important political date on the US calendar, the day Americans choose Tweetle-Dee or Tweetle-Dum, something extraordinary occurred. No, I’m not talking about the election of an orange tinged, womanizing, narcissist, reality TV star and demagogue. I’m referring to the curious trip taken by Secretary of State John Kerry. 
On Nov. 8th, the Secretary of State did not line up to cast a ballot like ordinary Americans. Instead, he had already boarded a jet and was flying south towards perhaps the most isolated and remote area on the entire planet - Antarctica. It’s a puzzling choice for one of the most powerful diplomats in the world to make a trip to the frozen continent with a winter population of approximately 1000 human beings.

According to the State Department,

>From November 10-12, Secretary Kerry traveled to Antarctica, where he visited McMurdo Station, the largest research station of the US Antarctic Program, as well as surrounding areas on Ross Island, and the U.S. Government’s Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. He was the first Secretary and the most senior U.S. government official to ever travel to Antarctica.

Officially, Kerry was in Antarctica to meet with researchers on a “wide range” of subjects including climate change and a visit to the world’s largest Marine Protected Area, the Ross Sea Region (1.55 million square kms).

Kerry is not the only high-profile figure to visit the continent this year. In April 2016, the Russian Orthodox leader Kirill made a visit to Antarctica not long after his historical visit with Pope Francis in Cuba.

During his visit, Kirill (antarctic area of) performed an “ancient ritual” blessing the land and sea as well as a tiny chapel near Russia’s Bellingshausen research station.

There are also unconfirmed claims that NSA director James Clapper and possibly even president Obama have also made pilgrimages to the region in 2016. Whether these claims prove to be true or not, there does seem to be a heightened interest in Antarctica recently. Is there a reason behind the growing attention Antarctica is receiving from world leaders?

In our day and age, the Antarctic proves to be unique. There’s no doubt, it’s an inhospitable, brutal landscape where winter storms rage and lacerate the landscape with winds reaching velocities of nearly 200km per hour. Yet, it is not devoid of life. The marine environment has proved to be one of the most bio-diverse anywhere on earth. The massive ice shelves also represent a critical resource.

International scientific research is also steadily intensifying. The Russians have drilled 4, 000m through the ice down to Lake Vostok, the largest sub-glacial lake on the continent, from their perch on the surface at Vostok Station.

From a historical perspective, the Antarctic was of special interest to another world power, the Nazis. Before the breakout of the Second World War, the Nazis sent an expedition to the Antarctic. The Nazis were looking to increase their production of fat and at the time whale oil was an indispensable commodity. Also, the Germans were searching for locations to establish naval bases. The expedition included multiple aerial surveillance missions capturing over 16, 000 photographs. The expedition occurred from 1938-1939, shortly before the start of World War II.

More importantly though, is that Antarctica stands out not only because of its unforgiving environment but because of its unique stature among major land masses.

It is something special and something to ponder. The Antarctic belongs to no one and everyone at the same time.

# Frozen Pyramids

In recent weeks, the internet has been abuzz with speculation surrounding the icy continent. Several Youtube videos have fuelled speculation about the possibility of a major discovering in Antarctica. One of the videos concerns a Google Earth image of what appears to show a pyramid-like formation at a location near the South Pole. The structure is striking because of its likeness to the Egyptian pyramids and its near flawless symmetry piercing through the snow. Whether it is an actual pyramid is debateable, but nonetheless it is still very intriguing. Could there be remnants of a lost civilization hidden beneath the snow and ice? Suspending disbelief momentarily, it seems perfectly feasible that the sub-zero temperatures could preserve the ruins in pristine condition. It would be a treasure without comparison.
If the remnants of an ancient (or alien) civilization were to be discovered it would be earth shattering news. What would we learn about ourselves? How would it affect our perception of life and our place the universe?

Adding to this intrigue another story circulating on the net deals with an alleged tweet made by former astronaut Buss Aldrin. Aldrin was in Antarctica but fell ill and was air-lifted to a hospital in New Zealand to recover. 
Apparently, Aldrin tweeted a picture of a pyramid-like structure writing: 

### “We are all in danger. It is evil itself.”

It has since been removed. Or more likely, it was a hoax.

Though some out there have fabricated fantastical stories about the idea of pyramids, it is true that Aldrin was in Antarctica and was flown to New Zealand for treatment. 
Finally, the Google Earth image and several other photographs are still quite captivating. Also, the visits by high ranking officials to the area this year is well documented. So, could the discovery of an ancient civilization be related to recent visits by both political and religious leaders?
