Testing Third-Party Content for DAZ 3D Studio - Viking Visual Art Tutorial
[Last time](https://steempeak.com/@viking-ventures/how-to-organize-daz-3d-studio-viking-visual-art-tutorial), I showed you how I organized my third-party content on Daz 3D Studio. This time, I'm going to show you how I test my new content before allowing it into my "good" Runtime folders.

# Preparing to Test

Let's test something I've downloaded from ShareCG, being my main source of free third-party content.

In my zzzdrop folder, I select a package I've downloaded and unzipped into its own folder. Once inside the product called "Cobra Boots" I copy the "content" and "Runtime" folders. (you want everything other than "read-me" or "documentation" files, really. I then paste those into my zzTest folder. 

(Usually the content you need is one level below the name of the product or one level below the "library" folder. With your test folder, you can copy/paste and see what things do relatively safely.)

So, I copy and paste...

Now, I go back into DAZ and refresh my zzTest Runtime folder.

I should now see some contents in the zzTest folder (if not, then either you pasted the wrong folders or there's something wrong with the product.)

Now, I go to my test scene...

# Test Scene

This is where I've set up *all* my current character models so that I can test clothing on them to see if the items work. (I even went and found everyone something to wear... usually they are standing there as naked as the day they are added to my scene...)

Along the center, I have my Genesis models. Gen 1, 2, 3 and 8 (there was no 4-7.) Gen 1 is gender-neutral, but I've left a morph on each of them so they have some color and shape.

To the right of Genesis 1 (male), I have Hiro 4 and Michael 4 - you can see that they were the same clothing, in this case a loin cloth I happened to have handy. (Though I now know this is a poor example of a "real" loin cloth - the things you research when writing!)

My one naked character is there too as I do not yet have any clothing for the Genesis Baby.

To the left of my Genesis 1 (female), I have Aiko 4 and then Victoria 4.2. (I was having trouble finding V4 clothes, so she's sorta, kinda wearing a Genesis 8 dress, lol.) Those two should wear the same clothing for the most part.

Behind 4.2 is Victoria 6 and in front of her is a Victoria 3 - I don't yet have any specific clothes for either of them. (My sorting/installing project - see last time - should help with this!)

So, now to test these "Cobra boots" I picked up...

# Testing

Er... not...

I brought up Victoria 4.2 and tried to apply the boots to her and nothing happened...
There are several possible reasons for this... some my fault, some not. One of the most common reasons is that the file was just for textures and not for the item. So, there's probably some basic boots that I don't have and this was just a cobra texture for them.

Unless I'm absolutely certain that it's the files themselves that are broken, I prefer to stick them in another folder for later - in case I come across the base product or figure out what went wrong. Sometimes, it's simply an error in how the artist arranged the folders... or something else I can fix when I understand things better... 

So, I stuck these Cobra Boots into my "not working" folder for later reference.

Then I tried another product... This time, it was a Maisie morph for one of my characters. (Until I clicked on it, I didn't remember which model this one was for.)

Often, once installed, all you do is double-click on the morph and it loads a new (nude) model onto the screen.

I've given Maisie little modesty stars to avoid requiring an NSFW tag for this post. Usually they come centered, but she was turned slightly. 

On the Scene panel (top-right), I see she's a Genesis 3 morph - which will help me know where to file her, since she works. But first, let's just test the other pieces to this morph.

With her selected in the Scene panel, I double click on her goth make-up...

I'm happy that she works as expected, so I can add her to my "good" Runtime for Genesis 3.

# Adding her to my Runtime

In my "zzTest" folder, I copy (or cut) the content folders and paste them into my Genesis 3 folder - as you see here. I simply drop them in there and let the computer combine folders as necessary. You don't  experiment in your "good" Runtime folders - that's for the Test folder only - because you can easily break things.

In this one Genesis 3 folder, I will drop any products that are specifically made for the Genesis 3 character... clothing, morphs, props. (I've moved my extra folders now - which I put in there before I solidified my process.)

Now, I'm ready to use my new products - or go and install more. Pardon me as I go and do just that...

# DAZ 4.12 note

I don't know if other people are having trouble with this release of DAZ (Sept. 2019), but I find that some things that worked on 4.11 don't work on 4.12. There are definitely some major differences between the two releases, so I'm not going to be throwing things away that don't work right now... 4.13 may solve some of these problems.
