Deficit-Spending gerät in Rumänien außer Kontrolle. Das Land befindet sich nicht nur seit den annullierten Präsidentschaftswahlen in einer schweren finanziellen und politischen Krise.

Rumänien hatte Ende 2024 ein Budgetdefizit von -9.9% des BIP, was heftig ist, eines der höchsten in der EU, Malta und Slowakei ist auf einem ähnlichen Niveau. Dagegen sieht das Defizit von Österreich mit 4-5% fast schon gering aus.

Im Dezember 2024 wurde der führende EU-kritische Kandidat bei den Präsidentschaftswahlen Călin Georgescu annulliert und durfte wegen mutmaßlicher russischer Finanzierung  einer TikTok-Kampagne nicht mehr antreten.

Im Mai 2025 hat dann ein EU-freundlicher Kandidat und der ehemalige Bürgermeister von Bukarest Nicușor Dan den zweiten Durchgang mit 53.6% der Stimmen gewonnen.

Die neue Regierung müsste jetzt einen harten, unpopulären Sparkurs umsetzen.

Die Staatschulden von Rumänien betragen derzeit etwa 50% des BIP, könnten aber in nur zwei Jahren auf 60% anwachsen.

Rumänien ist übrigens eines der wenigen Länder, die nicht den Euro eingeführt haben. Hier besteht die Gefahr, das die nationale Währung Leu, Plural Lei (RON) gegenüber dem Euro stark an Wert verlieren könnte, wenn die Schulden weiter in diesem Tempo steigen.

Andererseits könnte durch die drohende Abwertung die Bevölkerung einerseits weiter verarmen, aber andererseits könnte Rumänien dadurch auch wettbewerbsfähiger werden. Ein Vorteil, wenn man noch eine eigene nationale Währung hat.

Rumänien steht jedenfalls vor einer großen budgetären, sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Krise, die es irgendwie lösen muss. Gelingt dies nicht, könnten EU-kritische Kräfte weiter Zulauf bekommen.

Deficit spending is spiraling out of control in Romania. The country has been in a serious financial and political crisis since the annulled presidential elections.

At the end of 2024, Romania had a budget deficit of -9.9% of GDP, which is insane, one of the highest in the EU, with only Malta and Slovakia at a similar level. In contrast, Austria's deficit of 4-5% seems almost low in comparison.

In December 2024, the leading EU-critical candidate in the presidential elections, Călin Georgescu, was annulled and was no longer allowed to run due to alleged Russian financing of a TikTok campaign.

In May 2025, an EU-friendly candidate and former mayor of Bucharest, Nicușor Dan, won the second round with 53.6% of the vote.

The new government will now have to implement tough, unpopular austerity measures.

Romania's national debt currently stands at around 50% of GDP, but could rise to 60% in just two years.

Romania is one of the few EU member states that has not adopted the euro. There is a risk that the national currency, the Leu, plural Lei (RON), could lose significant value against the euro if debt continues to rise at this rate.

On the one hand, the threat of devaluation could further impoverish the population, but on the other hand, it could also make Romania more competitive. An advantage when you still have your own national currency.

In any case, Romania is facing a major budgetary, social, and economic crisis that it must somehow resolve. If it fails to do so, EU-critical forces could gain further support in Romania.
