Am Sonntag fanden Parlamentswahlen in der Republik Moldau statt, bei denen die pro-europäische (pro-EU) Regierungspartei PAS knapp die absolute Mehrheit (50.2%) erreicht hat.

Moldau ist ein kleines aber politisch für die EU und Russland bedeutendes Land, da es sich zwischen der Ukraine und Rumänien befindet und sich seit den 1990-er Jahren ein pro-russischer Teil (Transnistrien) abgespalten hat.

Während die EU Russland eine ausländische Einflussnahme und Finanzierung von Oppositionsparteien in Moldau vorwirft, hat sich kurz vor der Wahl auch der Gründer von Telegram zu Wort gemeldet und behauptet, dass es vor den Wahlen Druck von einem EU-Mitgliedsland gab, Telegram-Channels im Zusammenhang mit den Moldauer Wahlen zu zensurieren. Laut Pavel Durov waren die Löschgesuche in den meisten Fällen nicht gerechtfertigt.

Eine Woche bzw. zwei Tage vor der Wahl wurden zwei pro-russische Oppositionsparteien (Greater Moldova und Heart of Moldova) von den Wahlen ausgeschlossen. So knapp, dass diese die Entscheidung nicht mehr anfechten konnten.

Weitere Vorwürfe betreffen, dass Moldau es den Separatisten durch eine Schließung einer Brücke erschwert habe, an den Wahlen teilzunehmen und dass es für ausgewanderte Moldauer in der EU leichter gewesen sei an den Wahlen teilzunehmen als für die Hunderttausenden Moldauer, die in Russland leben oder arbeiten.

Diese Vorwürfe sind schwer zu überprüfen. Fakt ist hingegen, dass die Wahlbeteiligung mit nur 52% trotz der geopolitischen Relevanz bedenklich gering ausgefallen ist.

Wirklich repräsentativ und ein Grund für die EU das Ergebnis zu feiern, ist das alles aber nicht.

On Sunday, parliamentary elections were held in the Republic of Moldova, in which the pro-European (pro-EU) ruling party PAS narrowly achieved an absolute majority (50.2%).

Moldova is a small but politically important country for the EU and Russia, as it is located between Ukraine and Romania and a pro-Russian part (Transnistria) has seceded since the 1990s.

While the EU accuses Russia of foreign influence and financing of opposition parties in Moldova, shortly before the election, the founder of Telegram also spoke out, claiming that there was pressure from an EU member state before the elections to censor Telegram channels related to the Moldovan elections. According to Pavel Durov, the deletion requests were unjustified in most cases.

One week and two days before the election, two pro-Russian opposition parties (Greater Moldova and Heart of Moldova) were excluded from the elections. This was so close to the election that they were unable to challenge the decision.

Further allegations concern Moldova making it difficult for separatists to participate in the elections by closing a bridge, and that it was easier for Moldovans who had emigrated to the EU to participate in the elections than for the hundreds of thousands of Moldovans who live or work in Russia.

These allegations are difficult to verify. The fact is, however, that voter turnout was a worryingly low 52%, despite the geopolitical significance of the election.

However, none of this is truly representative, nor is it a reason for the EU to celebrate the result.
