I'm a career soldier who was sent to the planet where I knew this stuff would happen. I didn't believe that it would happen. But I got here and it did. And I'm here to survive it.

Over the last year, many things have changed. For example, time is more complicated here on the planet. As the sun goes dim, here on this planet it feels normal for someone to say that they are going to be late for work at 10:00 a.m. on a Wednesday. But what's normal for one and abnormal for another is becoming very complicated. The months here are longer and the days are shorter than they are on Earth. It's hard to say how long things have remained the same, but since I've arrived it's been longer than a year.

That was when the world was cold. I don't like to use the word "cold" but that's what's happened to this planet. The world's surface was like a frozen wasteland when we came here. It was always cold and barren. But, I wasn't concerned about that until just a few days before I was sent here.

At the time, it was only two weeks before the big storm and there were hardly any people down here. Well, actually, there were just a few scientists who were down here because there was going to be an experiment on how this stuff changes. Kind of like my drill sergeant, they want me to do a dangerous experiment that will catch me up to the chain of command.

In the beginning of the fourth month we decided to do the experiment, but it didn't go well. In the two weeks, half the city went missing. Everyone just seemed to vanish one day. There was no trace of any of them. I mean, in surveys they asked the people who lived in the city, "How do you know your neighbors?" They were real, normal people. Any of them could have been any of the crew I've worked with. But there were no answers.

Then after that, of course, there was the big storm and I got thrown here with a bunch of other misfits. Most of them were scientists who should have known better than to do this. They didn't want to talk about it, so I thought maybe they were in on it, but I'll be damned if I'll let those people get away with it.

So, after the storm, I heard rumors that the people who were there before had disappeared into the storm. They went missing into that mess. They thought, "We've been waiting for this for a year. Let's go see it." And they never came back. But we survived. We found ourselves here.

The storm seems to have been different for different people. Something like a crosswind for the earths surface. It meant that it was never safe for us to leave the city. If we went too far, we'd be lost. But as the storms blew over, people began to go crazy. We began starving and we had to eat each other. The weak and the little ones got eaten first. First they ate the children, because they didn't know why it was happening. They said, "The earth is burning us and there is nothing we can do about it."

So, that's what they said, and I'm not even sure it's true. Could be. But so many people disappeared and there was a big storm. It was like the first floor of a building was just blown out. But the doors were still there.

We fled up and up the building, until even the roof could no longer be seen. There was no way down. We were just stuck here in the cold of space. We spent weeks filled with despair. It seemed like it was whoever died, died. We lost minds. We became suicidal. We couldn't starve no more, so they just ate us.

Now, all we've got is the cold.

I've got three dead people in my barracks and their bodies are covered in frost. They are stiff and frozen solid. I've got to get them out and I've got to go back to my sergeant, but it's cold, you know? It would take too much. But I don't want to die. And my sergeant doesn't want to die. And there are other people I don't want to die -- people I don't know. But they are going to if we don't figure out a plan.
