* MIT Technology Review published its annual list of what it considers to be the top ten breakthrough technologies.
* This year’s list includes
**1.Unhackable internet,
2.Hyper-personalized medicine,
3.Digital money,
4.Anti-aging drugs,
5.AI-discovered molecules,
6.Satellite mega-constellations,
7.Quantum supremacy,
8.Tiny AI,
9.Differential privacy,
10.Climate change attribution**.

### Analysis and Comments

* This is always an interesting read. MIT Tech Review has been picking what they consider breakthrough technologies, i.e. technologies that will have a profound impact on our lives by shaping the way we work and live, since 2001 (and you can find previous issues when following the link above).
* This year, AI is featured in a few variations – 1) used to discover promising drug-like compounds which could make it faster and cheaper to discover new drug candidates and 2) the “Tiny AI” trend which involves finding new algorithms to shrink existing deep-learning models without losing their capabilities. This allows for localised AI services (so less reliance on the computational power of the cloud).
* **Another notable inclusion is Climate change attribution – a combination of advances and improving tools that have allowed scientists to state with increasing statistical certainty that global warming is indeed often fuelling more dangerous weather events**.
* What’s notable about MIT’s series is that they tend to pick a broad variety of technologies in terms of when they are available, **with some being in use already while others are estimated to be 5-10 years out**. They also helpfully list key players in each sections.
