This lovely squirrel which I observed last year, sometime in January, could teach us a few things on changing our perspective. I took a few pictures with my Nikon P900, as it foraged around. Using various angles of attack as it's strategy.

This got me thinking on the approaches we usually use when faced with a 'situation'. Mostly, the first response in our mind to anything that we see as a block to our plan, is frustration. Years of lectures on 'positivism' that have been hammered in our brains swing in our defense mechanism - 'Optimism', almost automatically.

However, optimism clouds over the rational thinking process sometimes. The red flags are likely to get ignored in the sunny bright sunshine of optimism. Requirements of data, for making a proper assessment of the situation, are also likely to get ignored. Neutral decision making takes a hit. Therefore, I believe that optimism, as the sole and standard response, will not be suitable.

Perspective is everything sometimes in life. Our training, life experiences, biases that we have picked up on the road of life so far. We all carry baggage, which makes a fair assessment of situation facing us difficult at times. It is best to forcibly adapt different views and perspectives to get a fair assessment of various angles of the situation. The squirrel admirably demonstrated the physical world equivalent of this approach, as we can see in collage of pictures I have created below:

This is easier said than done though. It is my personal experience that one perspective or the other takes over and dominates our thinking. Under such circumstances, I have found Edward De Bono's thinking method very helpful.

'Six thinking hats' is a method of 'parallel thinking' for analyzing all aspects of a problem, proposed by Edward De Bono. Assigning a very specific colored hat to a specific angle of thinking, like Yellow for optimism, Green for creativity etc., De Bono encourages the users to picture each particular hat on their head in turn and asks them to carry out the thinking in the style indicated by the hat color. This mental visual cue helps the users to focus their thinking pattern in a specific manner. Thus, all aspects related to the problem can be analysed

### Do you believe 'structured thinking' and adapting different perspectives help us get to better solutions? What approach do you use to thinking? Please share your views in comments. Thanks
