Thinking about the next step
Since I can’t do very much physical labor I turned my attention to the layout of our property. One of the things we want to do is relocate our pig pen. During the summer when the first bulk produce comes from the garden we usually move our pigs from pasture to the pig pen. We do this because we can easily drop any leftover food or plant material straight in there without having to walk very far.
The other reason for the pen is that by this time the pigs usually get quite big and are rooting more heavily. Their growth seems to match the needs of our land. In fall when most of the plants are pulled out and fed entirely to the pigs, is when the pigs are also consuming the most food.

Our pig pen is situated between the house and the main in-ground garden. It’s a very solid structure which can keep in nearly any animal. In the coming year however, we’ve been wanting to use this area for our baby goats. It’s nice, sturdy, protected and no goat kid can get their head in the fence. It offers a warm shelter and a safe playground while I can keep an eye on them from the house.

*Yes I'm talking about you*

This does mean we need another place for the pigs but I can’t quite find a right spot for them. I dislike permanent infrastructure but leaving them in a electric fence at night or when we’re away leaves me restless. I think permanent infrastructure takes away part of the beauty of the land even though we are growing (rasp)berry bushes all around it to cover the fence. If we are going to get miniature cows (which are definitely on the list) we need as much room for grazing as we can possibly spare so any permanent structure kind of takes away from the grazing area. This bugs me.

There are two possible spots we have in mind for a new pen. Either a add-on to the existing pen or one further away next to the turkeys/fruit trees. Honestly when I try to envision a structure on either spot I dislike the look of it. What to do..?

Another project we are about to get on with are the raised beds next to the house. My husband got free pallets from his employer.
This is about half what he could get, FOR FREE!

It’s in excellent condition. So by next spring these things should be up and that saves a lot of trouble with slugs. The slugs always munch on the early veggies like they are starving. Copper tape works for us so keeping the beds high up with a line of tape will repel 99% of them.
This makes me excited!

First the raised beds, then the fence in spring/summer and the pig pen will follow after because we probably won’t do pigs next year. So many things to look forward to!
