### Plara it is! If you've ever traveled around in Thailand before, you probably have come across this dish call 'Somtam' or green papaya salad. No, not the one they usually serve foreigners but this is the more intense version. They one they pour a sh*t load of a dark fermented fish liquid called 'Plara' in. > Yes! That's the one! Honestly, I never like the foreigners' version. ***That one without the dark fermented fish liquid doesn't sound or taste right***. So shilling it real hard over here now you may wonder, the is that liquid you're talking about exactly. > Pla ra (Thai: ปลาร้า, pronounced [plāː ráː]), similar to padaek in Laos, is a traditional Thai seasoning produced by fermenting fish with rice bran or roasted rice flour and salt fermented in a closed container ***for at least six months*** - [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pla_ra) Now here's the more real explanation: ***Imagine the smell of fish that's been rotten for 6 months or so***.. that is it! As mentioned, smells like hell (for some people, at least) though, as for the taste, it's salty, fishy but it's umami! It's that magic sauce just like fish sauce where it makes every thing really turns umami. > Salt is also salty though Yes, but there's no that unique fishy hint taste like Plara or fish sauce. This magic sauce, you put in a plain veggie stir fry without no other meat, ***it's really just simply good!***
### Somtam it is! Plara can be an ingredient for many different dishes such as papaya salad, other different kinds of spicy salad, soup, fruit dip, etc. What I eat every so often and probably the most often of all Thai food I eat is ***'Somtam' or Thai spicy green papaya salad.*** Main ingredient, you guessed it! Green papaya. Crunchy! As for the flavor, it's super flavorful because you got tons of garlic, chili (a lot!), fish sauch, **plara**, palm sugar, lime juice. Then, if you'd like to add more texture to the dish, you can add on little Thai eggplant, green beans, tomatoes ***or even some raw seafood like crabs or shrimps***. Those are so my favs! Last week, we prepared Somtam Plara at home. In fact, we do this every so often. It tastes good, easy to prepare and it costs almost nothing really. ### ***If you'd like to try a plate of this***, all the markets in Thailand got this dish! Please let me know how it goes #lol
