Why is no one calling 2018 the "year of the Dapps platform"?

*disclaimer: I'm a pineapple, not an investment adviser. I've tried to include some basic information so this post will be informative to users who are less informed, and also because I myself am still learning. I'm open to hearing your opinion so please share!* [Etherium killers on the way](https://www.pexels.com/photo/ripple-etehereum-and-bitcoin-and-micro-sdhc-card-844124/) I've heard various YouTube channels and blogs claiming that 2018 will be the "year of the DEX" (decentralized exchanges) or the "year of privacy coins". I personally feel that Dapps platforms will see even more growth then either DEXs or Privacy coins. ## "Etherium Killers" on the way Etherium changed everything for crypto, allowing these currencies to become more than just currencies and be used for a variety of new functions. At that time I didn't really understand what was so special about it but since then, I've learned enough to know how essential it has been for the space. It has gone without any real competitors since it's rise to prominence. That is changing now. For those who don't know, most tokens (commonly called "coins") are created using the Etherium blockchain. Dapps also include things like dtube and busy.org on the steemit blockchain. In the coming year, I believe we will see a lot more ICOs and platforms being built on other blockchains and platforms which allow the creation of dapps will become more prominent. ## EOS A lot of us our familiar with **EOS**, developed by steemits very own Dan Larimer (@dan). It is poised to be faster, cheaper, safer and more scale-able than Etherium. Those who are familiar with Dan know that he knows how to build things. He is always thinking a few steps ahead which is why EOS's ICO has been a year long one, the intention being to allow as many of us to get our hands on a few shares as possible in the early days. It also seems to have a lot of advantages for developers to use over Etherium, of which I won't pretend to have a deep understanding of. It's also managed to remain in the top 10 of coinmarketcap.com despite still being in it's ICO stage. ## NEO **NEO** is looking like it could be Etheriums first real competitor. It's built a hell of a reputation for itself being faster and cheaper than Etherium as well and the way NEO tokens generate **Gas**, which will be the in-platform-currency (kind of like our SBD) is an interesting model. The fact that NEO tokens are indivisible but Gas IS divisible, may work the the platforms advantage as well. Since NEO coins generate Gas, people are going to want to hold on to them. A bunch of new platforms and tokens are already being developed on NEO including **DeepBrain Chain** - AI on the blockchain, **Red Pulse** - a social media platform for market speculation, **Trinity** which will be NEO's scalability solution (if it even needs one), **Nex** - Neo's own decentralized exchange (where exchanges may be done with Neo/Gas rather than bitcoin, increasing Neo's liquidity) and **Narrative** which will be a direct competitor to steemit when it is up and running by the end of the year. ## Other Platforms **Icon** is getting it's shit together as well. Icon is Korean based and we all know how crazy Korea is for crypto. They also seem to have ties to many institutions which could help propel them forward. They hope to be a generation 3 platform which means multiple blockchains will be able to communicate with each other directly. We will see whether or not they can pull it off in the coming months, their wallet is up and running this week and they already have a bunch of Dapps being announced with more to come. **Qtum** seems to be right right behind NEO. I don't know enough about them to say much but I do know there are already a bunch of partnerships and Dapps in development so this should be another Etherium competitor that has a good year. **Lisk**, **Cardano**, **Stellar**, and **Ardor** are some other big names that are competing with Etherium going forward, I could have easily written about these coins but EOS and NEO are the ones which have peaked MY interest so far and which I know enough to share why I think they'll have a great year. There are many more which are still in the earlier stages and sure to grow quickly. Some of these projects are bound to do better than others and some have a long road laid out ahead, but some of them are already on their way. I personally believe that it won't be long before NEO creeps up on Etherium and that EOS will start to follow suit once it finishes it's ICO. Whether or not any of these platforms will be the "Etherium killer" remains to be seen, but they don't need to kill Etherium to succeed. There is room in the space for more than one popular Dapp Platform. While **Omisego** may bring DEXs mainstream, **Bitshares** may finally have it's time to shine in 2018, and while privacy coins continue to gain adoption as regulations come in, I think we will see even more growth among these Dapps platforms which will likely have a fierce battle to remain in the Top 5 and may even overcome the likes of **Litecoin**, **Bitcoin Cash**, and **Ripple**. --- ### Join the "Be Awesome" community The Be Awesome discord chat, was created with the intention of making deeper connections with fellow steemians.
