"My ABC's of Nature" Series-Letter "C" Continued-Part 5

**LETTER "C"**

**CARPENTER BEE**
Carpenter Bees look like Bumble Bees but are very different. They don't get together and make hives. Each female makes their own nest by drilling holes into wood and they prefer soft wood like pine and fir. This may explain why I found this one on my porch step because my next door neighbor has several pine and fir trees. Their nests can be found in decks, roof eaves, window trim and fence posts; my neighbor has a wood fence too. I looked around and didn't see any nests.

They are chubby bees as you can see in the photos. Females do not sting unless they are handled and males do not sting at all. My research tells me that females have no hair on their face, they have an all black head, and could care less about people. I was moving all around it taking photos and it just sat there the whole time. Male Carpenter Bees have hair on their face, have white or yellow markings, and are always flying around people and anything that moves. This looks like a male but acted like a female, so I am confused as to the sex of this one.

They do not eat wood; they eat nectar and pollen. Carpenter Bees stay in their nest all winter and come out in Spring.

**CLOUDED SULPHUR BUTTERFLY**

I found this pretty Clouded Sulphur Butterfly on my neighbor's Zinnia flowers.

And this one was in my yard.

**CRICKET**

This Cricket was on my porch. I would much rather have this Cricket than the gross Camel Cricket that I posted yesterday.

"My ABC's of Nature" Series continues with Letter "D" in another post.
