>In der Schule haben wir gelernt, die Gestalt der Erde sei eine an den Polen abgeplattete Kugel. Doch die Wissenschaft schreitet fort, neue Geräte und Methoden ermöglichen neue Erkenntnisse. Wissenschaftler des weltweit angesehenen GeoForschungsZentrums (GFZ) in Potsdam haben im Jahre 2004 bekanntgegeben, dass die unterschiedlich wirkende Schwerkraft der Erde selbst auf der ebenen Fläche des Meeres Höhenunterschiede bis 100 Meter bewirken kann und man deshalb die Gestalt der Erde eher mit einer Kartoffel als mit einer Kugel vergleichen müsse. So ging dieses neue Erdmodell als "Potsdamer Kartoffel" durch die Medien und in die Geowissenschaften ein.
