Confused about how the blockchain pays out posts ... you're not alone

So I did some number crunching to try and reverse engineer how it works and this is what I found.

This post paid out for me just a little while ago and my share should work out to $26.85 as listed on the site - author total. So lets see if we can figure out how that is calculated.

I received 13.423 SBD and 2.923 steem which, at the current market prices when it paid out, is approximately $63.51 (an estimate as I'm just look it up on the coinmarketcap.com website and not 100% accurate). As you can see, that number is no where near the $26.85 that is listed on the post. So what is the difference?

What I found out is that the number on the post most likely assumes that the SBD is at par with the US dollar. It makes that assumption because SBD are supposed to be pegged to the US dollar and not fluctuate that much. When I make my calculations assuming that SBD is $1, I get a total of $26.20, which is very close to what was listed on the post. The discrepancy is most likely due to the system using a floating average for the price of steem to make the calculation. (Thanks to @lifenbeauty for reminding me of that fact). The fact that the system is paying out SBD's assuming they are worth $1 US when in actual fact they have not been par for months, means that it is VERY worth while to keep your post at a 50%/50% payout as the dollar values of the posts are significantly more in US dollars than listed.

When the SBD price returns to par, then the option to be paid out in steem dollars would be fine as the payout calculations are accurate. If SBD drops below $1, then I will be switching to 100% steem payouts.

Conclusions

At this moment, the price of SBD is helping me to determine how I want to get paid out on my posts. With it far above $1 US, means 50%/50% is well worth my while. The higher it goes, the more we get paid. This is, I'm sure, a unintentional consequence as SBD is supposed to stay pegged. I hope this helps people reconcile the accounting on the post payouts. I don't know if this is a bug or not, but I hope it helps the developers and users.

Peaceful Steeming!
