[Nasdaq](https://www.nasdaq.com/), the second-largest exchange in the world by market capitalization could open a cryptocurrency exchange in future if the market becomes sufficiently regulated, said the CEO of the exchange in an interview with [CNBC’s Squawk Box](https://www.cnbc.com/video/2018/04/25/nasdaq-is-open-to-becoming-cryptocurrency-exchange-ceo-says.html) on Wednesday, April 25.

Adena Friedman Nasdaq CEO said that
> "Certainly Nasdaq would consider becoming a crypto exchange over time."

She also added
> "If we do look at it and say 'it's time, people are ready for a more regulated market,' for something that provides a fair experience for investors... I believe that digital currencies will continue to persist it's just a matter of how long it will take for that space to mature. Once you look at it and say, 'do we want to provide a regulated market for this?' Certainly Nasdaq would consider it."

Friedman especially views ICO's as a sphere that seriously needs to be regulated. She said
> "ICOs need to be regulated.The SEC is right that those are securities and need to be regulated as such."

Earlier Nasdaq made an agreement with Gemini, the cryptocurrency exchange founded by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss to provide its surveillance software,"SMART". "SMART" will be used by Gemini to monitor its market and protect the users from potential illicit trading practices.

While it is evident that Nasdaq is not planning a cryptocurrency exchange in near future but the company does have Bitcoin futures contract in pipelines. And I personally feel that Friedman's wording and overall body language about cryptocurrencies were highly positive and it's a big thumbs up for many concerned parties, regulators or investors.
