Some people would have you believe that you should always have something worthwhile to say for every occasion. I'm not one of those guys. There is a reason why "silence is golden". Not every occasion needs words, maybe a picture but not words. When I was young my mother would tell me "children should be seen and not heard" and "if you do not have something nice to say, you shouldn't say anything". Yep, she got me coming and going! What does a child do with that? Ignore and receive a beating or listen close and stay quiet? I chose the latter after receiving the former. For years I would not talk, then it became my thing. The only times I spoke up were when I felt I could no longer stand by and witness bad things continue to happen. Decades later I still stay quiet, for the most part. I'm a quiet guy. Until I deem a conversation worthy of my input. No, not all situations deserve words or require them. Most times it is best to remain reserved and listen to what others have to say. Then, if they are taking things in the wrong direction, it is time to speak up. This isn't for everyone of course. Some people ramble on 24/7 and their words aren't as valued. Balance is nice. Sometimes it's best to just listen to music and ponder the deeper meanings of life, and how we fit into the grand scheme of things. Much of what we say now has already been said by deeper, wiser, and smarter people. Many comedians now are simply rehashing anecdotes told by other comedians. Same goes for musicians. People keep on trying to be unique by reinventing the wheel. What do I say when there's nothing to say? Why, nothing of course! Nothing is perfectly acceptable. Heck, I've spoken to doctors who say absolutely nothing 99% of the time I'm with them. It's the one time I'm gabby. I tell them what's wrong and they fix it, pretty simple. Everyone is in such a rush to be heard, but sometimes not being heard lends a more powerful note to a situation. Sometimes it's best to just be quiet and listen. Such as a funeral, a sermon, speeches, a concert, a movie, etc. If you don't feel comfortable being silent around someone, I would like you to examine the why of that, not for long but long enough. There are days when I never say a word. I've been married to the same woman for twenty two years and I have four children and they love me for who I am, but much more importantly they listen when I speak. Why? Because of the rarity of my words. Not just because I made a sound emanating from my vocal chords, but because when I do it is worthy of listening to. They appreciate what I'm saying, even if it is usually funny. After all, it is one of mom's other key sayings. "Easier to catch flies with honey than with vinegar". Honeyed words are easier on the ears and the message conveyed quicker. Well, humor is nothing if not honeyed words. My mother used to say "Speak softly, but carry a big stick", still not sure what in the world she meant by that..I'm sure it was from some famous author. Intonation, modulation, inflection, meaning, vocabulary, or simple silence. I know there have been more times when a simple grunt has conveyed more meaning than a whole diatribe. I've had entire conversations with my children just using grunts, it's fun. It's funny! They participate. The overall messages are received and sent. Shoot, we even have our own made up garbledy gook words. Here are just a few. Flarglesnarg Phnurfl Blarg Flargleblarg dagrabbit Flaklsmak Umpf Bargelflarg Unph Mph Snargelflarg Blech Blich Flabsnabbit Snababbit Snargle Mtpaga Ddbachh "Mpherna "Bergleflarg "Herbleflarb Rhaba ghaba burble flarb Haerbalflarbit Shoot, this whole conversation could've been one or three grunts, if done well. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. This is just a few extra minutes I had in the wee hours, fiddling around. Thought I'd say something on here at least. LoL! Love you all. Thank you for reading along. Much love, light and respect, X
