Our fourth destination was to visit the town of San Rafael de Mucuchies in the beautiful tour we made through the magical city of Merida, although the stay was for a short time we had the joy of knowing the emblematic <b>Capilla de Piedra</b>, also known as the <b>Chapel of the Virgin of Coromoto.</b> For every place I visited I was filled with much more peace, being totally impressed by the mountains under the cloudy sky and being much more convinced that nature is so perfect. Getting off the bus and observing the surroundings of the site made me fall in love with this small town breathing such a fresh and calm air, taking my eyes right to the center of the site, where the famous stone church is one of the important symbols of faith in the Andean culture.<br><br><blockquote>

Nuestro cuarto destino fue conocer el pueblo de San Rafael de Mucuchies en el bonito tours que hicimos por la mágica ciudad de Mérida, aunque la estadía fue por corto tiempo tuvimos la dicha de conocer la emblemática <b>Capilla de Piedra</b>, también conocida como la <b>Capilla de la Virgen de Coromoto</b>. Por cada sitio que visitaba me llenaba de mucha más paz quedando totalmente impresionada por las montañas bajo el cielo nublado y quedando mucho más convencida que la naturaleza es tan perfecta. Al bajarme del bus y observar los alrededores del sitio me hizo enamorar de este pequeño pueblo respirando un aire tan fresco y tranquilo, llevando las miradas justo al centro del sitio, en el cual es allí donde se aprecia la famosa iglesia de piedra siendo unos de los símbolos importante de fé en la cultura andina.

The Stone Chapel was built by the Venezuelan artist Juan Felix Sanchez, the church and part of its surroundings is entirely made of stones that after staring at every detail it seems that the entire structure comes out of the ground as if it had been made by nature itself. The design is simple but very moving and impressive, reflecting the great dedication of the artist in which the stones fit so precisely. It is said that this artist dedicated years of his life to build this incredible work, by hand and with local materials (such as stones from the river and nearby mountains).<br><br>

La Capilla de Piedra fue construida por el artista venezolano Juan Félix Sánchez, la iglesia y parte de su alrededor es totalmente realizada con piedras que luego de estar mirando fijamente cada detalle parece que toda su estructura saliera desde el suelo como si hubiese sido realizada por la naturaleza misma. El diseño es simple pero demasiado conmovedor e impresionante donde reflejan la gran dedicación del artista en el cual, las piedras encajan de una forma tan precisa. Se dice que este artista dedico años de su vida para construir esta increíble obra, a mano y con materiales locales (como piedras del río y de las montañas cercanas).</blockquote>

I do not have any exact information if the church at any time has access for visitors, in our opportunity the doors were under padlock, however through it we could appreciate the interior of the same, through the bars or the small windows that around has this church. Although the size is not so big, its rustic and cozy design transmits a great calm or peace. Like the outside, the inside of the church is completely made of stone, on the other hand, there are wooden benches and some religious images. The guides told us that inside the church lie the remains of the creator of this church and to one side those of his life partner. And there I could understand that this church is not only a place of spiritual space, but also a tribute to Juan Felix Sanchez.

No tengo alguna información exacta si la iglesia en algún momento tiene acceso para los visitantes, en nuestra oportunidad las puertas estaban bajo candado, sin embargo a través de ella podíamos apreciar el interior de la misma, por medio de las rejas o las pequeñas ventanas que alrededor tiene está iglesia. Aunque el tamaño no es tan grande, su diseño rustico y acogedor transmiten una gran calma o paz. Al igual que la parte de afuera por dentro es totalmente de piedra, por otro lado, cuentan con bancas de madera y algunas imágenes religiosas. Los guías nos comentaron que dentro de la iglesia reposan los restos del creador de esta iglesia y a un lado los de su compañera de vida. Y allí pude entender que está iglesia no es solo un lugar de espacio espiritual, sino también un homenaje a Juan Felix Sánchez.

On the other hand, around it you can see two monuments, the first one has written that it is dedicated to Dr. Prebistero who dedicated 15 years of service in that area and the second one did not have a plaque with a specific name, which I assume is the creator Juan Felix Sanchez.

My visit to the Iglesia de Piedra was not just a sightseeing tour, through this architecture I was able to reflect on the connection that exists between nature and the human being, how the creator through the years materialized something so durable and beautiful, being a testimony of such a creative and spiritual person. If you ever visit Merida, don't miss the opportunity to see this incredible creation.
