Facebook will start "this week" to propose to its European users new privacy settings to adapt to European data protection regulations (RGPD), the group said Wednesday.

Announced at the end of January, before the outbreak of the scandal of the British firm Cambridge Analytica, these measures would be adjusted to standards of protection of personal data of European citizens that will be applicable also to all companies, even those that are not based on the continent.

The RGPD requires, for example, clear information to the users and that its endorsement is collected in reference to an eventual use of its data.

"Everyone - no matter where they live - will be invited to examine important information about how Facebook uses their data and make choices about (protection) of their privacy on Facebook," the group said. a text published on his blog.

These new measures will be applied in Europe "this week" and "in the weeks and months that come around the world," said Rob Sherman, deputy head of security at Facebook, during a meeting with journalists at the headquarters of the US group in California. (West).

In particular, users will see a message at the top of their current thread in which they will be invited to choose if they wish to share information such as their political or religious preferences or their "love situation".

They can also choose the advertisements they wish to receive or decide whether or not to use facial recognition, which allows Facebook to identify its users in photographs.

"Our intention is to propose the same confidentiality parameters and controls" around the world, Sherman said.

The group is immersed in a scandal related precisely to the data leakage of tens of millions of users to the company Cambridge Analytica, specializing in strategic communication, which worked for the campaign of US President Donald Trump in the 2016 elections.

Facebook has launched in the last weeks a vast communication campaign on this topic, as well as on the political manipulation in the network.

Its executive director, Mark Zuckerberg, submitted last week for ten hours to questions from the US parliamentarians on these two issues
