Good day everyone and welcome to this 40k Lore post! I am Zak Ludick from Cape Town, South Africa.

I want to start out by explaining why I call this an "Introduction" to Necrons is that while I was there when they were first released and their 2nd large reveal in Lore, there is even MORE that has been revealed in subsequent editions that I know nothing about and will still need to learn.

This is perhaps true of MOST factions of 40k really. But because of the unreliable narration of the grim-dark 41st Millenium, this matters less since everything is so very obscured in mystery all the time!

# The Initial Necron Lore

In the beginning, the first hint of Necrons was shown by a little drawing outlaying dangerous species and things found by some traveller in one of the rulebooks.

Some time later, the Necron faction was revealed - soulless robotic undead warriors. The entire army was robotic and silent. Led by Necron Lords, there was one core troop choice, 3 elite choices, 3 Fast Attack and 3 Heavy choices.

Necrons had awoken from tombworlds mostly because of people poking around where they should not - this included the Adeptus Mechanicus, Rogue Traders and others.

This is what usually happened, but in 4th Edition more of the Necrons were waking up and activating, re-establishing their Tomb Worlds and often attacking humans, aliens and chaos alike in the surrounding space.

The Necrons seemed to be following the orders of the C'Tan, which were some sort of energy beings with some pretty powerful abilities.

There was something called the Red Harvest where the Necrons were killing other beings and harvesting their essence for their C'Tan masters.

# Then it all changed, the Phaerons woke up!

So it turned out that the Necron Lords were the lower nobility of the Necron Dynasties. A Phaeron was the leader of a Dynasty and the owner, generally, of a Tombworld, a fleet and a territory.

Unlike the deadpan and silent Necrons from before, these guys have their memories and personalities intact. The entire history of the Necrons we heavily expanded and involved lots of tragedy.

Before the Necrons were robotic undead soldiers they were a fleshy fleshy race called the Necrontyr. These guys had a big crush on another race I will talk about more in another post that had practical immortality.

Necrontyr on the other hand, suffered from short lifespans and a lot of cancer from the star that shone over their homeworld.

After studying the sun, the Necrontyr discovered that there was a creature feeding off their star and thus allowing their sun to give off dangerous spectrums of radiation.

The Necrontyr developed a method of communication between themselves and this creature they called the C'Tan which means Star God in their language.

This creature summoned more of its Kin and the Necrontyr now had creatures with which they would win a war (one that I will mention in another post of course) but this would also be their downfall as one of their "Star Gods" convinced the supreme leader of the Necrontyr - the Silent King to undergo Biotransferrance to make them immortal.

This Biotransferrance was successful... but at the cost of their souls! The C'Tan were feeding on the stripped-out souls of the Necrontyr!

What had happened now was that all Necrons were stuck in the caste system their metal bodies were without the ability to gain their station or learn. All castes were now locked and individuals are unable to change and develop.

The Necrons however, planned their vengeance well in advance and when their other war was over, they turned on the C'Tan and shattered most of them into smaller shards that were then easier to control.

This is JUST a scratch on the surface of this Warhammer 40k faction. Their history was heavily expanded and I have not even covered what they do on the Tabletop!

But I am going to call it a night over here!

I hope this was entertaining!
