Imagine a world without the internet, a place or world where technology and information transmission took a different turn. Life without the internet would be different , full of challenges. The internet has proved to be pivotal in revolutionising the way we send , receive and access information.

THE CONCEPT OF THE INTERNET

The concept we know today as internet has evolved over decades, but has its roots dating back to the 1960s
The internet is basically a connection of different computers, this concept was first envisaged by J .C.R Licklider, late Into the 1960s, the United States Department of Defense’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) began funding the development of ARPANET, the first operational packet-switching network. ARPANET was designed to facilitate communication between researchers and scientists at various universities and research institutions.

The internet was invented through the work of many people, not just one. Some of the key figures were Lawrence Roberts, who proposed and led ARPANET for many years, and Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the World Wide Web.

The ARPANET was an effort made initially to connect computers across the united States , and this laid the foundation for the internet we know of today , computer scientist frank heart and his team , built and assembled the hardware and software necessarily needed for the project to work out, and this includes the first packet switch, which was known as the interface message processor.
In the late 1960s computer technology was still being developed, as to that the ARPANET team had to work with limited resources. And this made it difficult for them to produce a network that would provide efficient and effective communication across computers .

The first firm of communication sent over ARPANET was on October 29, 1969, when UCLA student Charley Kline attempted to send the word “login” to a computer at the Stanford Research Institute. This initial network only had four nodes, but more were added to allow research universities to share data and other resources. Though The system crashed after the first two letters were transmitted, but this event marked the birth of the internet.

After the development of ARPANET, other networks were developed, but these new individual networks could not communicate with each other. In order to solve this problem, a set of rules called the Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol were developed, known as TCP/IP. These rules allowed for universal communication across all networks, and made sure that packets sent over a network would be delivered to the correct destination.

WHEN WAS THE INTERNET RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC?

The World Wide Web ( which was a system of interlinked hypertext documents ) was developed By Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 and became widely available in the early 1990s,
The Web allowed users from any connected computer to locate resources and web pages through the use of Uniform Resource Locators, or URLs. The URL functions as an address that tells the computer where to find the resource on the internet. The Web also uses HTTP, Hypertext Transfer Protocol, to enable users to download linked resources, and HTML, Hypertext Markup Language, the formatting language for web pages. In contrast to popular belief the web is not the internet itself rather it’s a program that runs on the internet !!.
The introduction of web browsers such as Mosaic and Netscape Navigator created an avenue that made it easier for people to navigate the web and also access information. E-commerce sites like Amazon and eBay emerged, which allowed people to buy and sell goods online. Search engines like Yahoo and Google revolutionized the way people searched for information .

And not to forget this also led to the creation of communication or social media platforms in the early 2000s.

The production of smartphones also led to an expansion in the internet’s reach, which made it accessible to more people.

Today, the internet is a very essential tool for communication, commerce, and entertainment. It has revolutionized the way we work, learn, and socialize, and has fundamentally changed the way we interact with the world around us. Allowing us to carry out numerous tasks in seconds.

As we look back on the history of the internet, it is clear that its development has been driven by collaboration, innovation, and a desire to connect people and information. The internet has come a long way since its humble beginnings in the early 1960s, that’s the more reason you and I should value it.

This is my entry to the #marchinleo , which is a great opportunity toake posts and have them curated .
