Religious persons are, on average, less intelligent than atheists, scientists say.

With the growing number of religious people, it is predicted that by 2050 only 13% of people will be atheists.

But in a new paper published in 'Frontiers in Psychology', researchers say differences in intelligence between religions and atheists may be because they rely mostly on intuition.

Responding to more than 63,000 online participants who had been shown to be atheists, religious or agnostic, every person had to complete a 30-minute series with 12 cognitive tasks that measured the ability of planning, reason, attention and memory.

Above all, the researchers have discovered that atheists performed better in all spheres than the religions, even when they included demographic factors such as age and education.

The agnostics were ranked chiefly among atheists and religious in all duties.

But scientists say that this result may not be a sign of low intelligence, but the weak results of religious intelligence may be due to performance in tasks where intuition and logic had collapsed
