Satoshi solved this problem by inverting control away from central authority and placing it back into the hands of all participants without any one of them being able to assert selfish control.  So the answer seems to come back to leveraging the power of community to combat abuse by singular selfish forces.

I'm not sure how one accomplishes this in a system where we've already opted in (nature).  Bitcoin requires you to explicitly opt in and you risk your investment in hardware and energy to try to cheat.  Nature's answer seems to be the requirement of enlightenment to understand the damage to the commons and the weak point is a few bad actors can ruin it for everyone.
