My first thought was "secure from what?"...

It's an app that tries to propagate itself through everything in the same way viruses do and vacuums data from your machine and sends it to Norton for analysis (if you don't think to opt out in the settings). It also tries to set up a search engine as the default on your machine. A couple of decades ago we used to call this sort of behavior "browser high-jackers". I still use Norton on my Windows 10 machine (which is a pure VM running on my mac). I used to have Norton running on the mac natively, but it kept freezing up so I use Avira and Bitdefender instead. Why do I worry about viruses on a mac, you ask? Because I have gotten them on my mac. Those of you who think you're safe because you only run a mac are deluding yourself and will get your private keys screenshotted if you're dumb enough to leave them on internet connected machines.

VPN's are good to have, but it is extremely important how you get a VPN if you don't want your data compromised. All a VPN does is encrypt traffic so that your ISP can't see it, but if your government wants to steal your cryptocurrency all they have to do is get a court order and serve a subpoena to the VPN to spill the details on your VPN usage. There is a well known case where [this has already happened](https://invisibler.com/lulzsec-and-hidemyass/). There have been other cases where FBI agents (such as the famous Silk Road case) have compromised such services (TOR in particular) to steal bitcoin. Those [dirty cops were prosecuted](https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2016/08/stealing-bitcoins-with-badges-how-silk-roads-dirty-cops-got-caught/) (the siren call of hard money is irresistible even to badge wearers).

There's an important principle to understand here. If your machine is connected to the internet at all, it is not secure. If you sign up for Norton, they will only TRY to make it secure from criminals according to their definition of criminal at a given point in time. Government criminals including criminals working for Norton, still potentially have access to all your data. So if you're reading this while logged into the Steem blockchain, you need to guard your Owner key at minimum (keep this on an encrypted airgap machine or write it down) if you don't want government to come in and steal your Steem because they will when crypto gains enough mainstream adoption to be a threat to their parasitic sources of income. This goes for any other private crypto keys you have as well. Make "authority" play honest.

When it comes to information security, you cannot trust any other company. You can only trust yourself. Hopefully most of you already know this.
