"Common Side Effects," is an animated series (by the way i love animations) on Adult Swim that offers a sort of satirical exploration of the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare system. The show delves into the discovery of a miraculous blue mushroom capable of curing any disease, setting off a chain of events involving pharmaceutical companies and even the Government.
The show revolves around the MC, which is Marshall Cuso, a medical/drug enthusiast who discovers a rare blue mushroom in Peru, who doesn’t seek fame, fortune, or power or even money. Instead, he genuinely wants to use his discovery to help people, making him a stark contrast to the pharmaceutical companies and government agencies that see the mushroom as either a financial opportunity or a serious threat to existing structures. His idealism, however, often puts him in dangerous situations, forcing him to navigate a world full of deceit, hidden agendas and if I may say capitalism. Another important character is Emily Marshall's former school mate and current assistant to Reutical Pharmaceutical Company CEO Rick Kruger who becomes entangled with Marshall, even though Marshall has a deep resentment for Major Pharmaceutical companies.

I also really love the animation style used. The show has been well received especially depicting its own form of critique of corporate greed and how they are solely profit oriented even if it is to the detriment of all others. it's part mystery, part satire, part thriller, and part comedy. One moment, characters are discussing the moral implications of monopolizing a life saving cure and the next, they’re caught in a bizarre chase scene involving corporate assassins and rogue scientists. This unpredictability keeps the show engaging and prevents it from feeling rigid. It is also poses the question I think as to why is doing the right thing so difficult, why does it have to be so complicated?

Overall, "Common Side Effects" is a really daring and innovative series that challenges viewers to reflect on the intricacies of the healthcare industry through a satirical lens. Its compelling characters and relevant themes contribute to its status as a significant and thought provoking animated show.
