Just A Bit Of Colour Popping (Arrrggghh)

Way back towards the end of the 1990's *"colour popping"* was *the* thing. Where ever you looked there were images that had been colour popped (or selectively coloured or whatever you chose to call it). I seem to remember it was an advert that kicked the trend off again. I can't even remember what the advert was for, but it featured a young girl in a red coat. Everything else was black and white. The "soundtrack to the ad was "*Search For The Hero*" by M People.

And suddenly colour popping was everywhere. Particularly if there was an item coloured red that could be "popped" against a black and white background. All of a sudden there were images of red post boxes, telephone boxes (does anyone remember those?), red dresses, red hats, red cars, all in front of a black and white background.

In my opinion colour popping really outlived its welcome, probably because it was done to death. It dragged on and on, and every so often it seems to have a (usually) short-lived renaissance. Most colour popping was using one single colour "popping" out of a black and white image. To be fair, some images were beautifully worked and the colour popping did actually work nicely, some not so much.

*Jade, and NO colour popping*

So here I am, being my typically contrary self and bemoaning the longevity of an outdated photography trope, whilst at the same time presenting some selectively coloured images. What's your opinion on colour popping? A useful tool if used well, or an outdated means of faux creativity?
