While travelling through Santa Catarina in Brazil, my wife and I visited the German-influenced town of Pomerode. As a German, you have no communication problems here, as the German language is widely spoken. The architecture here is also modelled on historical Germany. Half-timbered houses are widespread here. It rained incessantly during our stay in Pomerode. So light painting outdoors was out of the question for me.  So I looked around the house we had rented for objects suitable for light painting and found what I was looking for.

Auf der Reise durch Santa Catarina in Brasilien besuchten meine Frau und ich die deutsch geprägte  Stadt Pomerode. Hier hat man als Deutscher keine Verständigungsprobleme, denn die deutsche Sprache ist hier weit verbreitet. Auch architektonisch hat man sich hier am historischen Deutschland orientiert. Fachwerk prägt das Stadtbild. Während unseres Aufenthaltes in Pomerode regnete es unaufhörlich. Ein Lightpainting im Freien kam deshalb für mich nicht in Frage.  Deshalb schaute ich mich in dem Haus, welches wir gemietet hatten, nach für ein Lightpainting geeignete Objekte um und wurde fündig.

In the bathroom, I discovered a soap dispenser with green liquid soap. The thing was literally crying out to be photographed. I positioned the soap dispenser on a sideboard, illuminated it from behind with a torch and rotated the camera in 45° increments. 
I show the result in the picture below. The torch is reflected on the surface of the sideboard. That was not very satisfactory.

Im Bad entdeckte ich einen Seifenspender mit grüner Flüssigseife. Das Ding schrie förmlich danach, fotografiert zu werden. Ich positionierte den Seifenspender auf einen Sideboard, beleuchtete ihn von hinten mit einer Taschenlampe und rotierte die Kamera in 45° -Schritten. Das Ergebnis zeige ich auf dem Bild unten. Die Taschenlampe wird auf der Oberfläche des Sideboards reflektiert. Das war nicht sehr zufriedenstellend.

The bathroom, in the picture below, was a blast! Red tiles and green ceramics! 😎 I took this as a sporting challenge and used the same colour combination in the cover picture. To fill the picture better, I zoomed in a little on the object. I set the lens to 55mm. There I illuminated the soap dispenser once in the lower part with a torch without a colour filter and in the upper part with a red colour filter. I set the torch itself, a "LIGHTPAINTER RYU'S LIGHTWORKS", to the lowest brightness level. I rotated the camera in 45° steps around the optical axis.

Das Bad, im Bild unten, war der Knaller! Rote Fliesen und grüne Keramik! 😎 Das nahm ich mal als sportliche Herausforderung an und setzte die gleiche Farbkombination im Titelbild ein. Um das Bild besser zu füllen, zoomte ich das Objekt etwas heran. Ich stellte das Objektiv auf 55mm. Dort leuchtete ich den Seifenspender einmal im unteren Teil mit einer Taschenlampe ohne Farbfilter und im oberen Teil mit roten Farbfilter an. Die Taschenlampe selbst, eine  “LIGHTPAINTER RYU´S LIGHTWORKS”, stellte ich auf die niedrigste Helligkeitsstufe ein. Die Kamera drehte ich in 45° -Schritten um die optische Achse.

After I had finished the cover picture, I looked for other objects that I could rotate in the picture. My eye was drawn to a wall decoration. It consisted of a board on which bottles deformed by heat were attached.

Nachdem ich das Titelbild fertiggestellt hatte, hielt ich Ausschau nach weitere Objekten, die ich im Bild Rotieren kann. Mein Blick wurde auf eine Wanddekoration gelenkt. Sie bestand aus einem Brett auf denen durch Hitze verformte Flaschen befestigt waren.

I took one of the bottle boards from the wall and shone the torch onto the glass from behind. It wasn't too easy to expose the whole bottle. The angle of the torch had to be moved, but without bringing the surroundings into the picture.  
You can see the result in the picture above. The camera was again rotated around the optical axis in 45° steps.

Ich nahm eines der Flaschen-Bretter von der Wand und leuchtete mit der Taschenlampe von hinten auf das Glas. Es war gar nicht zu leicht die ganze Flasche zu belichten. Der Winkel der Taschenlampe musste dafür bewegt werden, aber ohne die Umgebung ins Bild zu bringen.  
Auf dem Bild oben ist das Ergebnis zu sehen. Dafür wurde die Kamera wieder in 45°-Schritten um die optische Achse gedreht.

The last picture shows the set. I mounted a GoPro12 on the camera's hot shoe to record the scene in a video.  I will report on this in one of the following posts.

<h2>What Is Light Painting?</h2>

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.

Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
