*Deborah, what went wrong this time? We put our faith in you and this is how it turned out?*

Deborah was an orphan, she grew up with her grandparents who took special care of her, she attended elementary school in the village her grandparents lived in but when it was time to enrol into a secondary school, one of her Aunties asked her to come over to the city to continue her education.

When Deborah was in elementary school, she was a goal-getter and all about books, she took pride in choosing the friends whose goals aligned with hers. **Deborah** was a name on the lips of the teachers and pupils at **Christy Angels Elementary School,** she stood out due to her outstanding performance even as a little girl.
Her grandparents were gladdened to have such a beautiful and brilliant granddaughter.

Time came for the common entrance into Secondary school, Deborah excelled with the best score amongst her peers. Even as Deborah lived in the village, she didn’t behave like the rest of the other kids; she was different in terms of everything and had unique ways of getting things done. People said she took after her mother and had the exact face of her father.

**Aunty Naomi says you should come to the city and continue your education there.**

**No. I cannot leave you and grandpa here, you both need my help to get things around done.**

Grandma and Grandpa burst into laughter.

**We will get a househelp, so we don’t have to stress ourselves when you are gone.**

**But Grandpa loves it whenever I make tea for him, who will do that if I’m gone?**

**Shhhhhhhh, Grandpa will manage. We will manage here, your grandfather and I want you to go to the city because we want the best for you. We will always come to visit and you can come visit during the holidays, alright?**

**Al..ri….ght.** Deborah responded sluggishly.

**I know my baby will make me proud** Grandpa added.

They ended up having a family discussion with Deborah late into the night.

The next day was **Eke market day,** Deborah’s grandparents took her for some shopping as a send off gift. By the time they came back, Deborah began packing her bags and went to bed early because she had a long journey ahead of her tomorrow. The following day came by so quickly, she began her journey by road to the city, Deborah’s eyes were full of tears; she was going to miss her grandparents but she had a future ahead.

After nine long hours, she got to her Aunty’s place. Deborah’s Aunty(Aunty Naomi) was a single, busy rich lady, she was happy to see her neice and welcomed her into her simple yet luxurious home. Aunty Naomi’s home had every appliances one could ever need, that made life even easier and more fun. Deborah was treated like a princess and felt super comfortable there.

September, Deborah was enrolled into the best secondary school in town **—King Solomon’s College,** where only the rich could dream of entering. She got into the school and showcased her intelligence, Aunty Naomi was so proud of her, she took Deborah shopping during the weekends to encourage her. The comfort became too much for Deborah to handle, she began backsliding academically but she didn’t know she had backslided so much until an event happened.

**You must be really happy, since you were chosen to represent the school for the English competition** Sharon, Deborah’s friend said.

**Who wouldn’t be? I’ll make sure they don’t regret choosing me to as a representative.**

**I agree. But the competition is fast approaching and you don’t look like you really care, shouldn’t you read and prepare for it?** Deborah’s group of friends asked.

**Haha, do you mean the English Language competition ? I don’t need to read, I mean it’s English, I’m one hundred percent sure I’ll emerge the best even with my eyes closed.**

Deborah bragged about her brilliance and how good she was in academics, saying she would crush it.

**Still, you should read to be on the safer side. Don’t leave anything to chance** Another of Deborah’s friend threw in.

**I believe in myself without an iota of doubt, that I’ll do well without opening any book to read**

Her friends had to accept her decision. The day of English Language competition came, Deborah ended up eating humble pie when she came out last in the competition and failed woefully! This was the first time **King Solomon’s College** had ever lost in a competition, which caused setbacks and the first time Deborah failed in anything academics.
