*Since I heard some silly theories about why I didn't post last three days, people please stop with nonsense, I was on pretty exhausting business trip and I tried to keep up with upvoting my favorite authors.* ___ #### All people don't share their tastes, opinions and knowledge about the sounds and the quality of the sound. While some are perfectionists and care about every detail in their home sound systems, others are just happy with their little plastic PC speakers or with those that came with Hi-Fi. **Some people invest a lot of money in speakers and amplifiers, some people just can't afford it and some just don't care because they don't hear the difference.** Good sound is expensive thing. But it is not all about money, good sound also depends on the room and the position of speakers. You can get pretty different results from the same pair of speakers if you place them somewhere else in the room.
https://imgur.com/VJYhHcX.jpg

___ **This is not post for audiophiles, they already know how things are going.** #### I want to show you how to place your little PC speakers or 5.1 system in the room so you can get the best possible sound that your speakers can provide. I will not bother you to make a little home studio from your bedroom or living room with diffusers or bass traps, but if you are interested in getting the best from your cheap speakers, work only with things what you already have. ___
https://imgur.com/DazWJ3d.jpg

#### The type of speakers that you can see on the image above is one of the worst options. But there are many types of speakers, the price range is very wide and the most people on this planet can't afford the perfection. But if you're reading this, there is obviously one thing that you do have: **A ROOM!** # What is the shape of your room? Rooms can be rectangular, round, big, small, with inclined walls or inclined ceiling, or maybe you want to place your speakers under a dome. These all spaces have different influences on the sound that comes out from your speakers. The sound in rectangular rooms depends on the size of the walls and height of the ceiling. Lower ceilings can result with over compressed sound while higher ceilings can produce echoes. Round rooms definitely produce echoes if you don't place proper bass traps and diffusers on the walls. But since the most of the rooms are rectangular, let' stick with them!
https://imgur.com/AuW6rLi.jpg

[*IMAGE SOURCE*](https://www.google.hr/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjf_ae17N7ZAhUBWCwKHTr6BIcQjRwIBg&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.3dream.net%2Fjsp%2Fpublic%2Fshowroom%2FshowroomDetails.jsp%3FshowroomId%3D258335&psig=AOvVaw0OP-5wc_UypGR_AwkBJK4O&ust=1520671350240469)
___ #### First thing you should do: place the rug on the floor. It will reduce noise and vibrations, it will also absorb a little bit on lower frequencies. Lower frequencies are one of the biggest problems in acoustics of a smaller, rectangular room. If you want to test the lower frequencies in your room, just take 5-6 porcelain plates and place them in the corner. Then turn on your speakers and play a song with strong bass. You'll notice that your plates are vibrating and producing pretty irritating sound. It's because the most of the lower frequencies end in the corner. If you stand in the corner, you'll hear that song very muddy. I know I promised not the bother you to place different types of absorbing materials in the corners, **but it would be nice if you remove any glass, ceramic or metal objects from the room's corners to prevent those vibrations.**
https://imgur.com/RnM7H7D.jpg

___ #### Next thing we have to deal with is *PANORAMA*. We want to get the realest image we can from our bad speakers. Sound signal is distributed through the multi-channel sound field to each of the speakers, so we want to place them symmetrically in the room. So place your speakers by the shortest wall in the room. Stereo sound is spread between two speakers (left and right) and if you have the stereo system, you should try to make a equilateral of you, as a listener and your speakers. So position your speakers at 60-degree angles.
https://imgur.com/vCzLpox.jpg

___ #### In the case that you have a surround system with five speakers (it's usually 5.1 system, but I will talk about sub woofer later), they all should be on the same distance from the listener. So five speakers form the circle. Place the center speaker right in front of you. Front left and front right speakers have to be positioned as I explained for stereo systems, at a 60-degree angle. Now we have to position rear left and read right speakers at a 110-degree angle. Check the image!
https://imgur.com/JZYNBxU.jpg

___ #### Now let's talk about the walls! The better speakers, the more distance from the walls. The walls can cause the problems of early reflections of higher frequencies if the speakers are too close to them. If they are too distant to the rear walls, those corners can be full of muddy lower frequencies. These problems are successfully handled in record studios with absorbing materials, bass traps and diffusers. But since you don't own a record studio, just place your speakers between 20 cm and 60 cm from the rear walls and between 40 cm and 1 m from the side walls. ___ #### Height of the speakers There are speakers specially made for standing on the floor and if you have those, you don't have to bother with their height. But if you have some desktop speakers or home cinema sound system, you have to lift them at least on height of 1.2 m. But the best solution is when the high frequency driver (tweeter/treble speaker) is on the same height as your ears. Tweeter is a smaller dome, usually on upper side of a speaker. Check the image if you don't know how to locate it!
https://imgur.com/cUyQo1K.jpg

#### There it is! It should be on the same height as your ears. ___ #### If you have a little bit stronger speakers and you keep them on your wooden desk, your whole desk might behave as a sub-woofer! Now you think it's cool, but I assure you - it's very bad sub-woofer that fills your ears with bad, messy tones and prevents you to hear the true image. So just place them on some thick foam to prevent that. ___ #### And about that sub-woofer... Since the most of you have 2.1 or 5.1 system, let's find solution for positioning your sub-woofer. You don't want to place it in the dead corner of a room, nor in the dead center of the wall. Last thing you want is to place your woofer under that wooden table. That's only making it worse. So place it on the floor, but on a layer of a foam, near the corner of your room but at least 0.5 m far from it. ___ #### I think we did great job, now listen your favorite songs from your newly positioned speakers... Feel the difference? https://youtu.be/sevZEOUXpw4 ___ #### Thank you!!!
