In the past year or so I've written about [my early interest in Bitcoin](https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@firepower/let-s-talk-my-tryst-with-bitcoin-in-2009-and-what-happened-next) amongst other things. Since then so much has changed in this space. Infact the last 2.5 years with Steem and 3 years of active participation in the cryptocurrency space has made one thing clear. Most if not 99% of the people are here for speculation, not for the tech. There's no right or wrong here, just stating from general observations. <center>.png)</center> <center>[Source](pixabay.com)</center> The ones who are here for the tech are few. I've seen plenty of such people here. From the user end perspective I think in recent times it's quite clear that people don't really care about reinventing the wheel with blockchain as much as trying to hop on the cryptocurrency bandwagon and make some easy money overnight. It's not bad but there hasn't been anything simple in this space that warrants mainstream attention beyond speculation. Real use cases? Where are the numbers? Steem has been a good social experiment so far but it's got its own set of issues bogging it from sometime now. The low rate of retention and the type of scammy people we've largely attracted; ones interested in making a quick buck and booting the platform soon after has shown that there's are never-ending issues that need to be addressed promptly. Other blockchain tech have largely failed to generate real users on the dApps built on these blockchains. Ofcourse, there are hundreds and thousands of users in various groups for these tokens but they are all purely in there for speculating on the token value. Hardly anyone makes a single transaction per day on the underlying tech. Even as I feel one should always hold Bitcoin over any other token, I find myself hardly making a single transaction on the BTC blockchain in a week sometimes. I don't really find any use for Bitcoin as a payment system currently as much as I see it as a speculative asset that can increase in value overtime. It's the price that's all that matters in the day to day life of a cryptocurrency enthusiast! Fomo and prospect of overnight pumps and riches has brought a majority of people to this place. I think blockchains such as Steem and the dApps built on it have a long way to go. Mainstream audience doesn't seem to care for reinventing the wheel with this tech and I think it's safe to say that these past years have proven that most people will come for the profits and hardly a handful stay for the tech with their investments locked in, pushing for growth and development. It's amazing that as Steemians we are actually putting the blockchain to use. It's amazing how we can actually put the tokens we hold to some real use, day after day. This does give me hope that we can grow even further in the future. As a blockchain, cryptocurrency and Steem enthusiast I've met hundreds of people across India, and from other countries from my travels in the past 2.5 years and that has given me a good insight into the mindset and expectations of different kinds of users. Anyway, let's hear it from my readers now. Why did you really enter the world of cryptocurrencies and what has made you stay back? --------- **If you like my work kindly resteem it to your friends.
