Although it is now over a decade since the brick of love between Adaobi and I collapsed, I still very much remember how it all started - how a pack of matchsticks ignited the fleeting fire of love that burned between us:

One rainy evening I was in my room reading when I heard a knock on my door. Immediately, I paused and waited for the knock again to be sure that my ears had not failed me. And I was right, the knock came again.

On opening the door, I found Adaobi by it. She was the beautiful but stroppy girl who lived next door. She had never returned my pleasantries but there she was at my door.
*"Can you please lend me your box of matchsticks?,"* Adaobi adjusted her short gown, *"I need to use my gas cooker tonight."*

I was stunned because I had never expected she would ever come to my door for any help.
"Alright" said I, before proceeding to my kitchen which was, without exaggeration, as narrow as a coffin. While I went, my door made a shrieking noise but I didn't look back.

A few seconds later, I was back. I was back to meet Adaobi sitting on my bed, her short gown revealing her spotless laps. Just then, the flash of lightening swept through my room to capture the beaming smiles on Adaobi's face. I smiled back.

The box of matches fell off my hands and neither Adaobi nor I bothered to pick it up until the next morning.
