The Unpredictable Night

<div class="text-justify">

It’s midnight, and I am the only passenger left on the train. The conductor walks down the aisle and whispers, “Your stop doesn’t exist anymore”.

For a minute, I pondered on how what he said. Not sure if my brain and ears were messing with me, I called out to him.

“Excuse me, sir, I didn’t get what you said.” I said politely.

“Hahahaha, I said your stop doesn’t exist anymore.” He let out an evil laugh, the one that sends shivers down your spine.

“How sir? I live there, how is it possible?” I feigned ignorance whereas I was quavering inside.

“Are you dumb or are you trynna act clueless? Well, I’ll save you the stress. You are coming with us!!” He yelled and I gasped.

“Please sir let me go, I beg you, let me go.” I went on my knees and begged frantically as tears rolled down my face nonstop.

“Please sir don’t kidnap me, I have no family to pay the ransom,” I begged.

“Oh my days, who told you, you are being kidnapped?” He asked, surprised by my outburst.

“Taking someone against their will is kidnapping and paying a ransom to be released is categorized as kidnapping according to the English dictionary.”

“It is? Tell me more, smarty pants”. He said, looking amused.

At that point I knew I was doing it again, the thing I did whenever I am trying to make my case, and this time I was doing it with my supposed kidnapper.

“Please sir, just let me go, I am an orphan and the orphanage I stay in can barely fend for the children there, demanding for ransom is as good as you killing me now as nothing can be done,” I hurriedly explained to him.

I saw a twitch in his eyes and I knew he was beginning to weigh his options and I continued.

“Please sir, life is already hard as it is, I’m terribly sick, and trust me I am bad for business. I have my crises every four hours and I'm about to have the next one. I said as I held my chest tightly.

“You’re sick?” I saw the shock in his eyes.

“Yes sir, I just left the hospital an hour ago because of my crisis so I was rushed to the hospital.

“Wow!!” He exclaimed.

For a split second, I saw something in his eyes again, I think it was pity but it was quickly replaced with something unreadable and I couldn’t tell what was going through his mind.

I begged and wept bitterly, my heart was about to explode.

“You know what? Get out!” He yelled.

“Me?” I asked not trusting my ears.

“I said get off this train this instant before I change my mind”. He spoke angrily.

With no warning he held me by the collar of my shirt and pushed me out of the train and I heard him mutter “bad market.”

I was pushed out with my bag and luckily for me there was no train in sight since it was late.

I picked up my bag and ran, not caring about my bruised arm. I ran as fast as I could. Not turning back or stopping to catch my breath.

I don’t know how it happened but I landed at the orphanage, safe and sound. For the very first time in my life of battling this terminal disease, it saved me, it saved me and I was speechless.
