I am often struck by the sight of my neighbors walking down the street with their faltering, slow, uncertain steps... Some are only a few years older than me. Surely some health problem has robbed them of their mobility, but they don't give up; they walk and walk, even if it's at a snail's pace.

My mother, on the other hand, has been very fortunate. At 90 years old, she is still able to take long walks, even carrying heavy bags. It's incredible to see her on the street with her quick and confident stride. She has been a great motivation for me, and I would love to reach her age with the strength she has.

For my part, I try to do my homework. Under normal conditions, I take several walks around the neighborhood, at least three times a day. Now I take advantage of the fact that I have a supermarket about 800 meters away and do my shopping on foot. I buy a few things at a time so that I am forced to walk to the supermarket several times.

In addition to walking, I try to do some yoga to keep my joints and muscles strong and flexible.

But this past month I've had some setbacks that have slowed me down a lot. First, I had to undergo treatment for some abscesses that started to appear in my armpits. I had had this problem for some time and finally went to see a dermatologist.

The doctor's theory is that the problem started because of an allergy to ingredients in my deodorant, so she recommended that I stop using it. I told her that I liked to walk and exercise and that I sweated a lot during those activities, and that the accumulated sweat caused a bad odor. She then recommended that I make a solution with water and a compound called alum stone and apply it to my armpits instead of deodorant. 

She also prescribed some fairly expensive antibiotic creams that I had to apply to the area twice a day, in the morning and at night, for two weeks. 

During those two weeks, I only walked a little at night before showering and applying the cream. During the day, I avoided any activity so as not to lose the effect of that expensive antibiotic.

But after the fifteen days, something happened that also sent me to the couch. 

One afternoon, I went downtown shopping with my wife. On the way back to the car, I was feeling very enthusiastic, excited by the activity of the businesses on both sides of the sidewalk. Suddenly, I felt a sharp pull in my lower left leg. It was difficult to get to the car, the pain was quite severe.

On my own, I took painkillers and anti-inflammatories, applied cold compresses to the area, and rested for five days. By the sixth day, I was able to walk around the house. After ten days, I went out again, but with great caution, walking slowly and paying close attention to the signals my muscle was sending me.

I must admit that so much inactivity has a negative effect on my mood. But I try to accept what I cannot control.

The important thing is that I am starting over. The natural compound the doctor prescribed for my armpits is not as effective as deodorant, so I have to change my walking shirts more often.

As so many other times, I have to adapt to these new circumstances. I think that's what life is all about, a continuous learning process to learn how to overcome the obstacles along the way.
