I'm not a huge fan of martial arts shows, but I do enjoy some action-packed series with a comedic twist. I was intrigued when I saw the trailer for the CW's Kung Fu, especially since the main character is a woman and it features a modern setting.

I understand this series is a reboot of an old series of the same name which aired from 1972-1975 but the writers deviate completely from the old one.

This series focuses on a young, Chinese-American lady, Nicky (played by Olivia Liang) who was sent by her strict mother on a cultural tour to Yunnan Province in China. This is to help this lady understand her roots better. At the same time, the tour was also a ploy by her mother to set her up with men. When Nicky discovers this, she hides in the truck of a Shaolin master, Pei-Ling Zhang (played by Vanessa Kai) and runs away.

Pei-Ling accommodates Nicky in the female monastery and trains her in martial arts. After Pei-Ling is killed, the monastery burned down and an ancient and dangerous weapon sword stolen from the monastery, Nicky returns to San Francisco to find that things had changed. Her sister Althea (played by Shannon Dang) is engaged and about to get married. Her brother Ryan (played by Jon Prasida) is grappling with accepting his sexual orientation and sharing it with his family. Her ex (played by Gavin Stenhouse), an assistant district attorney, is in a relationship and has moved on, too.

Then Nicky discovers her parents owe the mob and organised crime has infiltrated the city. Her mission is not only to liberate her family but also to fight for what is just while avenging her *Shifu's* death.

## Review

Kung Fu is a thrilling and action-packed American series that deals with themes of identity, family, and cultural heritage. It features a blend of traditional martial arts styles and some fantasy intertwined with a modern setting.

This first season comprises thirteen episodes. I commend the director for fusing Nicky's backstory into the first episode rather than spreading it around other episodes and leaving viewers to figure it out.

Other episodes take viewers through Nicky's struggle to reconcile with her family and save them from the injustices prevalent in their society. Also, her quest to find her Shifu's sword and killer continues throughout the season displaying the significance of the sword and how she is connected to it. The director treats Chinese traditions and ancient stories surrounding this quest with reverence.

**The Cast:** Most of the cast are Asians which keeps the show original and their chemistry is outstanding. The lead, Olivia Liang delivers a strong and nuanced performance as Nicky Shen, bringing both vulnerability and strength to the role. She's lively and good-looking and her action sequences are enviable.

The supporting cast is also excellent, with each character bringing their unique personality and backstory to the table. I like that Nicky's siblings, Althea and Ryan, assist on her quest with their skills. Althea is my favourite character next to Nicky. She's tech-smart, witty and pretty.

**The Fight Scenes:** The choreography and fighting scenes in Kung Fu are impressive. They are expertly choreographed, with a clear focus on showcasing Nicky's physical prowess and martial arts skills. I don't know much about martial arts but each episode features an array of diverse fighting styles with weapons like swords, staffs and knives.

The plot is well-written and the acting excellent. There are lots of twists and turns to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. The series manages to balance the action and drama with moments of humour and levity, making it an enjoyable watch.

Overall, it's a fine show and a refreshing addition to the current lineup of shows on The CW. I'm almost through watching the second season which is more exciting. I can't wait to start the third season which is currently being aired on The CW. I recommend this show to all action/martial arts lovers.
