Exploring One of the Longest Jetties in Trinidad, The La Brea Old Jetty
# Abandoned but not Unused!

I did not at all know that this existed until someone posted a photo of this jetty on facebook and apparently it was the one of the longest in the country! On checking Google Maps, I was so shocked to see a man made structure extending out from the shoreline for half a mile like that! It actually dwarfed the nearby peninsula and I decided we had to go film it with the drone but what I didn't know was that I was in for a huge surprise when we got there!

We made our way to a little old fishing village in south Trinidad in La Brea which is where the Pitch Lake is located by the way, a wonder of the world we did a blog on recently. The shoreline itself was littered with garbage and discarded fish parts from fishermen plying their trade. It was definitely not a tourist location, unpolished and raw. A little disturbed and put off, we could see the pillars of the jetty in the distance and it beckoned us to put our disgust aside and push on to the goal!

There were fibre glass boats all over the beach and in the waters tethered to the shore and so we had to make our way through like an obstacle course under and over the ropes that kept rising and falling as the boats in the water they were tied to did the same. We also had to navigate around boats landed on the sand!

We finally made our way to the pillars that were the start of the jetty itself. A local told us that not long ago, just a year, the wooden walkway was still in tact and it was now all gone. I regretted not finding about this unknown place sooner but, still I was grateful to have been acquainted with the knowledge at all before it was completely gone!

![IMG_7583.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/lemniscate/Eqd7UnC94Z4zyvGbhGbrHgctNUuKj4MHaf7wY72BC2brUsuJtH3ybCH4mrUchqYKKeG.jpg)

I tried to see if I could see the end of the jetty as one can normally do with a normal length jetty and I definitely could not from where we were on the beach. There were birds perched on the pillars for as far as the eye could see and I could not wait to get the drone up and try to fly to the end!

![Screenshot 2023-05-24 at 11.56.30 AM.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/lemniscate/23w2oCswuxbwxgLM82MmPyXYkRtDj7YDXJM8qCkEZwZU1kKk5HUYMdQtjyAkUGU5ptAro.jpg)

So I sent the drone up and before I began the flight, took a quick shot of my wife and I. You can get a great idea of where the jetty starts (literally from within the vegetation). I wondered how it looked when it was in full use as well as why something that could have been so iconic, be left to rot and decay instead of being turned into a tourist or leisure spot and enrich the poor fishing village.

I wanted to get a low down shot of the drone flying through the pillars (video) so I descended and did that first before proceeding. The birds that were perched upon the pillars all flew away in a large frenzy when the drone approached the water's surface. You can also see how muddy the waters were so close to the shore. As you'll see, this dissipates as we fly ahead and it turns to an amazing blue color!

![DJI_0087.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/lemniscate/48JABgg4QV1TC7ZVyNp8fsFx7f5sumsRJNtKjg9R7hB79yJjiAHNzjBGLRism3dxhg.jpg)

Heres a better view of the initial pillars in the muddier waters and the beautiful blue fringe that is beyond it. You can also see the boats on the left that seem to all be solemnly and militarily be saluting the fallen jetty. I realized that even at this height we still could not see the end of the jetty!

![DJI_0114.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/lemniscate/48aY7KwHg3KrSuuhBgyZboixoda6uKwdm3LHAZQThy5fLVcjGPWd7bnXyRSst1XuBE.jpg)

When I finally got to the beautiful blue waters, I descended again in between the pillars to get another low angle shot with the more vibrant waters and I was quite pleased with the detail and symmetry of the shot!

![Screenshot 2023-05-24 at 11.58.08 AM.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/lemniscate/243LrGCs5HE19x9r1BYrbN6ZCyMp2hh2DmJWiyLVaWinbNDXzUx1XAq8mVKtHD7KkbTED.jpg)

Along the way, I saw this expanded platform that made me thing that I finally got to the end of the jetty but it surely wasn't! There seemed to be a large rotted tank that was basically falling through what was left of the platform itself! If you look to the top right of the photo above you'll also see a large bird coming towards the drone in a threatening manner! He was just checking me out though, no collisions!

![DJI_0123 Large.jpeg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/lemniscate/2431jcBCv4oidfiKrAz7pJhXgZEzr5XJzkL2cFSq2DCvjRfVRJxGh5UhnG7X6bbGqjtRi.jpeg)

I gained some altitude to check where the actuall end of the jetty was from where this rotted tank was and you can see from above that still there was a large way again to go even after flying for so long!

I finally got to the end now, and I felt like I could see a figure that looked like a man in my viewfinder. It was a hot bright day and I could not make out what I was seeing properly from the glare on the screen but as I got closer I realized that it definitely was!

![Screenshot 2023-05-24 at 11.53.50 AM.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/lemniscate/23yJCNuaRsnFd8uzLU4aq5Q4sTA9hB899sP69zn3nJcXcKidpkwX67fXEex74pcDFjx35.jpg)

There was a man all alone by himself fishing out there with large coolers and fishing rods and buckets and all! I was immediately flabbergasted as I flew this whole way with a drone, seeing that this jetty had no way to traverse it and could not for the life of me believe that this man was here at the end just randomly. It didn't make sense in my head!

![Screenshot 2023-05-24 at 11.55.53 AM.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/lemniscate/23zkZguQDZDyskWZnE3BGLnHVLtWZD4QPjMNJMLGfZ2tdtgLvQrvDz2C8Ddz2gEBpqJZc.jpg)

The initial shock wore off and I began thinking clearly again and so I deduced that he must have taken a boat! The tiktok video I did on this had many people in the comments informing me that you can actually pay fishermen to take you in their boat to the edge! I was so shocked that whatever was left of the structure was not at all as abandoned as I had thought!

This was definitely the most fun I had flying the drone to explore an abandoned location like this! I definitely was not expecting to see some dude out there at the end fishing like some teleporting fisherman! I hope he got some awesome fish that day! In the photo above you can see a little bit of the village on the right! Thanks so much for coming along, cheers!
