Fell Dragon Book 3 Part 24

Greetings Readers!

I have spent a few hours this week building the world that Bolx comes from. At the moment it's going a little slow as each character is a little different from the main story. It's also a bit of a pain as he never got to know Saita under that name, but rather her real name, which will be revealed later.

I'm enjoying the semi-apocalyptic world and having him discover the humans and their weird customs. This is going to be a long section with breaks as he tells people about his time.

But until we get to that point, enjoy today's update. It's a little longer than Monday so I hope you all enjoy it!

After spending a few days with the Queen’s brothers Saita was ready to leave the hospital. As much as she was interested in learning more about what was inside her she felt nervous being in a hospital for such an extended period without needing to be there. She wanted to leave to go home. She had to catch her thoughts on that. She had no home. She was a guest and once she was done on this planet, she would likely leave the planet again. She doubted that she was good enough to make it into the Royal Guard as Queen Saasha had wanted. It would be better if she just went back to Bruno and Chaka. She wondered if she could convince Bolx to come with her.

She looked at him as he sat in the transport with her. He was staring out of the window with a furrowed brow. He had spent as much time with her as he possibly could; splitting his time between her and the castle duties he had suddenly found thrust upon him. She wasn’t sure exactly what he had been up to but as each day passed, he got more and more sullen.

“Hey Bolx, I have a question.” Asked Saita.

“Hmm?”

“When all of this is done what are you planning on doing?”

“Assuming my sister Siar doesn’t kill me I will likely continue to work with the queen until…” he paused then sighed. “Until we can do something about the Fell Dragon.”

“I was wondering…”

“Have you given thought to what Saasha has offered to you?” interrupted Bolx as he looked at her. “About you joining the Royal Guard?”

“I don’t know.” She lost her train of thought. “Seems like a lot of cutting of red tape just to get a human into the ranks.”

“The Royal Guard is considered the best of that the Saith planets have to offer.”

“And your queen wants to politically place a hated species in the group.”

“I suppose that is true, but it is not as if you have no merit, Saita. You’re a good fighter.”

“But I am not warrior Bolx. I do not have the training or the discipline needed.”

“Well, it’s not like you are just going to get in. There will be training, and you are not listening to me. You have already made up your mind to say no, haven’t you?”

“It is not my place and being a political pawn is not something I want. I have no value to Saasha with having no ties to any humans. What is the point?”

Bolx sighed under his breath and wondered if he should tell her that this was one of the only ways that she would remain safe. He, however, refrained from saying anything but rather smiled.

“The choice is yours Saita, no one can force you to stay where you do not want to be. If you do not want to stay you do not have to, but I will need to remain to help with the preparations.”

Saita looked out the windows and sighed, she had not had the courage to ask him to come with her. She longed for a friend but knew with her unique situation they would be hard to come by.

“If you have made up your mind not to be on the Guard then what are you going to do after the games?”

“Likely return to S-class fighting. Have to find a way to survive on my own.”
There was silence for a while before Bolx said softly. “Would it be so terrible to stay here?”

His comment shocked her, and she could only look out the window to prevent her from seeing his longing for her. “No.”

“Then why will you not stay here? You do not have to be on the Guard. There are plenty of other jobs you could pick up.”

“I will still be seen as Karesh’s daughter. The reason the Saith went to war and so many people died. What kind of life would that be for me?”

Bolx paused in a retort. She had a valid point. There had already been several people that Larden had had to deal with without Saita knowing about them just to keep her safe. Her staying on the planet was not safe, no matter how much he wanted her to remain at his side, for personal reasons more than for her safety.

“I understand.” He said softly. “I don’t like it, but I understand.”

“Would you come with me?” she finally asked after some silence.

He was startled by her request as she had shown no interest in him romantically before this and even now, she wouldn’t look at him, but he knew she was desperate to hang onto anything that gave her some kind of stability. He didn’t want that; he wasn’t ready to give up on what he had lost in the past. Yet, he could not force her to share his feelings and it hurt him. Perhaps after all this time, it was time to let her go. She was not the one he had loved; she was damaged far beyond the scars that shone on her face. Trying to force her into a romance that had come from his past was not fair to her and it wasn’t fair for him to pine after her.

“If I was not needed by Saasha then perhaps.” He said sadly. “But I have responsibilities here that I must complete. I’m sorry Saita.”

He gave her nothing more than that, sparing her any pain from a possible yes, he just could not give her. He saw her nod her head once then he returned to look out his side window. That was that it had hurt but it needed to be done.
He saw her dropped off with Danna before having the transport return him to the castle. He was miserable now, but he would have to hide it. Soon Saasha would have an answer from the human king, then Jethron would be arriving, and the Games would be upon them. There was still so much to do and so little time. He viewed the changing landscape as he travelled marvelling at how it looked. During his time, this planet had been ravaged early on in his life. It seems as though the Fell Dragon had affected the world far earlier than in his timeline it was on different planets and his home world had been spared. He had a chance to get to know his family better.

For years he had suffered survivor’s guilt and now, now he was surrounded by those he had lost. Yet it felt hollow. The last three years in his timeline had been hell but he had had her at his side, and they had fought against the coming of the Fell Dragon. She had taken what Edzeeker had offered just to see the world safe once more. He had hated her for that. She had allowed herself to become like the thing they were trying to defeat. She had sworn that they would fall with each other but after losing the child she had carried to the wasting disease she had changed and not for the better. She had pushed him away and, in the end, had forced him to come here. She was the last of his family and she had sent him away.

Now he was here, in a world where those that looked at him had relief on their faces, but when she looked at him there was nothing. He resented that. He would have preferred death to that. Sighing he looked at the building starting to thin out around the castle. Saasha never wanted the buildings this close to the castle. It left an effective killing ground in her opinion, but the population was growing after the Kai wars and the Saith were flourishing. Yet, for how much longer would that be?

The transport stopped and he got out, thanking the driver before making his way to the castle entrance. Usually, it would be his father that would come to greet him but this time he was surprised to see Gatex standing at the entrance smoking. That was one thing that hadn’t changed from his time. Gatex had always enjoyed smoking, much to their family’s disgust. Bolx remembered this well and made sure to get a box of his brand earlier in the day in hopes of running into him now that the family was starting to gather in the castle. The younger of the men didn’t look up as Bolx walked past him and put the box next to him. There was an audible sigh as he tapped the box and said. “Well then. I know the family doesn’t like to talk about my dirty little secret so for you to know my favoured brand means that you are very adept at gathering intel or you really are who you say you are.”

“I never lied about who I was. It is just exceedingly difficult to explain about where I am from. I take it Siar has returned from planetary duty? What other reason would you have to waylay me?”

“She is, how can I say this?” Gatex opened the new box and immediately lit a new cigarette with the old one before continuing. “Emotional about a lot of things.”

“Today is the day she meets her daughter for the first time, isn’t it?”

“So, she had a daughter in your time too?”

“Yes, but never made the Guard.”

“You did in her place?”

“Yes.”

Gatex drew a deep breath in and blew a few rings out. “She knew about your death and was prepared to come and mourn but now she has Mother, Father and Sister explaining to her what has happened. She will likely seek you out to see how similar you are to our brother.”

“I am not trying to replace the man that was your brother. Hell, I’m prepared to leave the planet if it is easier for everyone, but Saasha would prefer me close enough to question.”

“Bolx,” stared Gatex as he knocked the ash from the cigarette. “Whoever you may be, it is clear that something big is moving. Something with unfathomable power. I have never been one to look a gift horse in the mouth. I will take what knowledge you bring but don’t expect me to be your brother. Don’t expect Siar to see you as a brother. You are not the one that developed with us the womb.”

That stabbed Bolx deeply, but he only nodded his head once and said. “I understand. I’ll respect your wishes.”

“Doesn’t mean I don’t like the gift. Thank you.” The thin Saith turned his attention to the swaying grass.

“Enjoy.”

Bolx maybe took two steps into the castle’s entrance before Gatex cleared his throat. As Bolx turned to him Gatex had a sad smile. The Saith then said. “No one has spoken about what you have lost, have they?”

“We can deal with that trauma when we survive this.” Said Bolx sadly.
