Greetings Readers!

I finally found some time to write on Fell Dragon again so expect some wonderfully vivid memories from the Fell Dragon soon.

As you can see, Cupcake has decided to stop being a rat and become a meerkat instead. I was supposed to be working yesterday and she decided to sit in one of my hands as I was doing research.

Today we carry on with Bolx's memory as he explains to his siblings about his time with Kaiden.

Bolx was getting used to his time on the human world. Slowly he was adapting to their strange customs and learning their main language. With every step he took forward, Kaiden was at his side. She never let him go anywhere without her, even when the royals gave her other duties.

It took months of them working together before the story of her forced adoption came to light. Kaiden and Bolx had been sent with Doran and their unit to barter with some of the lizard species that were close to their planet. The journey would take several days, not long enough to be put to sleep for the trip.

While Kaiden rarely left his side, she was also particularly close to Doran and always ensured that she could keep an eye on Bolx and him when she could. Doran found it amusing. However, there were times that Kaiden was away training with other soldiers, and this was when Doran took the time to get to know Bolx better.

“It’s been a few months now, Saith. What do you think of our way of life?”
The two had been eating breakfast and Kaiden had just gone to sleep, having worked nightshift with some other soldiers. Something Doran had insisted on as she seemed to be interfering with Bolx’s work.

“All in all, I’d say you Humans aren’t that much different from the Saith. I mean, with the exception of the height, the tails, and how you educate your young. I enjoy your food, the music isn’t the worst I have heard, and well, the company is always pleasant.”

“Are you referring to Kaiden?”

“I was referring to all of you.” Bolx fixed him with a withered look, “Though since we are on the topic. You can maybe explain to me why once more, Kaiden fled from the castle to join us on this mission. I was convinced it would just be me and you, with a handful of soldiers.”

Doran scratched at his short hair and seemed to be muttering under his breath before he sighed and finally said, “You know about the adoption the royals put forward?”

“She mentioned soon after we met, never explained why that was a thing. Her father is still alive, isn’t he?”

“Indeed, Kaiden senior is still very much alive.”

“Then why are the royals so adamant that Kaiden join their family? It’s clearly very irritating to her.”

Doran twisted his face into a scowl, “Frankly it is, and somewhat rude. It’s not like the girl is without family. I essentially raised her once I took her from her father to be trained.”

“Sounds like you’re a little sore about the whole thing yourself.”

Doran seemed to want to defend himself, but stopped, and then nodded his head, “If you think I’m sore, you should hear what Kaiden’s father has to say about all of this.”

“If it’s such an annoyance, why does Kaiden stay?”

“She doesn’t belong anywhere else. Not really. With her abilities, the crown can’t let her just return to her father. They want to control her without it looking blatantly like imprisonment.”

“So, they force her to hate them? I don’t understand.”

“You wouldn’t understand our politics.”

“Try me.”

“Our royals have very clear lines. When children are born, they go either to the mother or father’s line. Karesh and Myla had two sons. The first was killed when he was a toddler before his brother was born. Natus was meant to go to Karesh’s line. When the second son was born, he automatically went to Myla’s line. Karesh needs an heir to continue the line, but there is a problem.”

“One of them can no longer have children.”

“Exactly. So, Karesh wants a strong child to carry on his legacy.”

“Even if they aren’t from his bloodline?”

“His bloodline continues with Aleux, his royal line is what’s dead in the water. He needs someone to fill that, and well, Kaiden ticked all the boxes.”

“But how did they even know about her? I know her ability is amazing, but I have seen stronger soldiers than her.”

“Don’t let her hear you say that. She’ll take offense.” Doran chuckled. “Honestly, that was my fault.”

“How so?”

“When I discovered Kaiden, my standing with the royals wasn’t as high as it was now. However, I did have certain freedoms. One of which was finding talented people to join this unit. We were often used to help in dire circumstances that would affect the population, whether that was to fight or provide assistance during a disaster.”

“Thus, your soldiers going to harvest the fields of Kaiden senior.”

“That man provides almost 5% of the total food eaten by those under Karesh’s rule. It may not seem like much when you look at the total, but the planet that you have been living on receives close to 60% of his crops every season. Him not producing food was hurting the race.” Doran leaned back. “I tried to talk sense into him, but he would see none. He blamed himself for his wife’s death and refused to see it any other way. We had no choice but to continue harvesting where he had left off. Within hours of starting, we noticed a tiny girl peeking at us from the house. We hadn’t known then that Kaiden senior had a child. Before we could speak to her, she gruffly told us we were harvesting the potatoes correctly.”

“And that’s when she created the ground creatures to harvest the vegetables?”

“Golems, and yes. It was something she had seen her father do once and she had copied it. We thought it was adorable. Until she copied my ability and burned down a section of a field stating the plants were sick. Before we could get water, she had copied another technique to quell her flames.” Doran smiled fondly, “Two powers are rare, three was unheard of, so I watched her.”

The older man leaned back in his seat and grinned, “Within the first day I saw her copy no less than ten abilities. It was amazing. I contacted a few doctors and scientists and asked if there had even been a child born with these abilities. Everyone came back to me saying there weren’t. This is where I messed up. I approached her father and asked him if I could take her with me to learn more about her ability. She must have heard me because she violently reacted to the request. It took several hours to talk her down, and she only stopped creating the golems after her father begged her to stop.”

“Had he wanted to hide her abilities?”

“I don’t think so. I just don’t think he thought of the far-reaching consequences if she was discovered by…undesirables.”

“Undesirables?”

“The Lizards.”

Bolx was aware of the age-old battle between the humans and the lizard kind they once shared an ancestral planet with.

“Kaiden senior was broken by his wife’s death. He needed time to recover, and with the human military now showing interest in his toddler, he was in a difficult position. He could deny me my request, but he didn’t know how long it would remain a request.”

“You would have taken the girl?”

“No, but he didn’t know that. I never would have threatened, but I couldn’t silence my men after what they saw, and he knew that. There was no way he could protect her if anything came for her.”

“So, he gave her to you?”

“Pretty much that simple. Yes. Kaiden wasn’t pleased, despite her father telling her it would be alright.”

“Why was she never returned to her father?”

“She’s gone home a few times since I first took her, but I don’t think she ever trusted her father again after he first let her go. I can’t say the doctors and scientists were gentle with her as a child. I know she blames me, and I suspect she blames her father.”
