I have always recognised their selling points and with the latest M1 chips, I have been keeping a keen eye on the latest Macbooks and iPads. Yet recently, I had to contest a questionable decision by a relative recently stating that an iPad Pro was an essential part to obtaining a professional master qualification at university. Influencer marketing is an effective way of conveying messages to certain demographics. One part of their customer base are students, a market that influencers have great control over. So when I was told that an iPad Pro was an essential part of university life and its ground breaking abilities to import documents and make notes with the Apple Pencil were mandatory, I was a little alarmed. In this isolated case, a lack of market awareness and general desire to join the crowd can sway all manner of logic. The iPad Pro is a great device, even for students but for a person who wants to jump on the bandwagon without being informed, there are caveats. Aside from the economical burden that most students will need to deal with, iPad Pros can do so much more than note taking. If one’s sole purpose is note taking, is the Pro worth it? While apps like Notability and similar are great, if you are not in the Apple ecosystem already, sharing content is not as easy without air drop. There are many alternatives if one is already invested in the Android ecosystem too. The Apple Pencil is great but for note taking, similar peripherals from Samsung, Huawei and others perform just as well. My personal preference towards performance and value based on user needs simply sway me from recommending the iPad Pro in this case.
