 **[EN]** Sunset Cliffs is one the most iconic places in San Diego. It's a costal line that extends for about 1.5 miles south of Ocean Beach. It is one of the most visited places in San Diego because of the ocean views with breathtaking cliff formations, and a lot of sea caves. The sunsets are memorable and you often see professional landscape photographers in the area, and also brides taking their wedding pictures there. I've posted about Sunset Cliffs before, but this area has so much to offer that I'm always finding something different to see. A while ago I heard about this cave with open ceiling in Sunset Cliffs, and I searched about it on the internet and found some blog posts saying that it could only be accessed walking in a day that the tide is negative, not only low tide, but super low, as the water is usually covering the entrance of the cave. >Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the combined effects of the gravitational forces exerted by the Moon (and to a much lesser extent, the Sun) and are also caused by the Earth and Moon orbiting one another. [source](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tide) For the tide to be low enough to reach the cave walking it needs to be a perigean spring tide. This only happens when the orbit of the moon is at it's closest point to the earth, and coincides with the alignment of the sun, moon and earth. This only happens 3-4 times per year. I had to check the calendar for when it would happen during the day (I didn't want to visit the cave at night). So I had to wait for 3 months from when I checked and planned in advance to go there. I had to be there at the right time, and remember that this has to be done before the tide goes back up!! When you get there the views from the top of the cliff are amazing, and you can see that the ceiling of the cave is surrounded by a big wire fence for protection. It is close to the sidewalk, there are a lot of pedestrians there and someone could easily fall. The cliffs are also very dangerous and need a lot of caution when walking near the edges. **[PT-BR]** Sunset Cliffs é um dos lugares mais icônicos de San Diego. É uma parte da costa que se extende por quase 3km ao sul de Ocean Beach. É um dos lugares mais visitados de San Diego por causa da vista para o mar com penhascos de tirar o fôlego e das muitas cavernas do local. O por do sol lá é memorável e voce vê com frequência no local fotógrafos profissionais, e também muitas noivas aproveitam para fazer suas fotos de casamento lá. Eu ja postei sobre Sunset Cliffs antes, mas essa area tem tanta coisa para fazer que estou sempre encontrando algo diferente para ver. Um tempo atrás eu ouvi falar sobre uma carverna com uma abertura no teto lá em Sunset Cliffs, e resolvi pesquisar a respeito na internet. Encontrei alguns posts em blogs falando que o acesso a pé só é possível em dias onde a maré esteja negativa. Não basta ser uma maré baixa, tem que ser uma maré negativa, pois a água costuma cobrir toda a entrada da caverna. >Marés são as alterações cíclicas do nível das águas do mar causadas pelos efeitos combinados da rotação da Terra com as forças gravitacionais exercidas pela Lua e pelo Sol (este último com menor intensidade, devido à distância) sobre o campo gravítico da Terra. [Fonte](https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mar%C3%A9) Para a maré estar baixa o suficiente para entrar na caverna andando, precisa ser uma maré viva perigeana. Isso ocorre somente quando a orbita da lua esta no seu ponto mais próximo da terra, e isso coincide com o alinhamento do sol, da lua e da terra. Isso ocorre somente umas 3-4 vezes por ano. Eu tive que checar no calendário quando isto ocorreria durante o dia (eu não queria visitar a caverna a noite). Então eu tive que esperar por 3 meses do dia que pesquisei e me planejei com antecedência para estar lá neste dia. Eu precisava estar lá na hora certa, e lembre-se que isto precisa ser feito antes que a maré suba novamente!! Quando você chega lá a vista do alto do penhasco é impressionante, e é possível ver a abertura no teto da caverna de cima, protegida por uma grande cerca de arame. Ela fica perto da calçada da orla e alguém poderia facilmente cair distraidamente. Os penhascos também são bem perigosos e precisam de muita atenção para andar perto da beira.     **[EN]** To access the cave you have to go down the cliffs to reach a small beach right next to the cave. The problem is how to go down the cliffs. **[PT-BR]** Para acessar a caverna é preciso descer o penhasco e chegar a uma praia que fica ao lado da caverna. O problema é como descer o penhasco.  **[EN]** There is a way down on this beach next to the cave, but it is very steep and dangerous. I saw a couple of people going down that way, and I think I could do it, but I had my son with me and even if he wasn't there, I don't think it was worth risking it. The best way is to walk north one or two more coves to find an easier way down, and then walk on the rocks near the water to reach the cave. Here in the next picture you can see an easy way down, and then some views of our walk towards the cave. **[PT-BR]** Tem uma descida bem nesta praia ao lado da caverna, mas é muito inclinada e perigosa. Eu vi umas duas pessoas descendo por ali, e eu acho que eu conseguiria também, mas meu filho estava comigo, e mesmo que ele não estivesse, eu acho que era um risco desnecessário. O melhor é caminhar para o norte mais uma ou duas enseadas, e encontrar uma descida mais fácil, depois andar pelas pedras perto da água até chegar na caverna. A próxima foto é uma descida mais fácil, e depois alguns visuais a caminho da caverna.          **[EN]** We finally got to the cave. There were already some people there, but not a lot yet. Seems like a lot of people was waiting for this day, and later it got super crowded. I was hoping for some blue sky pictures, but a dense fog came in around the time we got there. I could still find some blue sky here and there, but the fog really disappointed me. **[PT-BR]** Finalmente chegamos na caverna. Ja tinham algumas pessoas lá, mas ainda não tinham muitas. Acho que muita gente estava esperando por este dia, pois logo depois a caverna ficou cheia de gente. Eu estava esperando por um céu azul para tirar as fotos, mas uma neblina densa chegou mais ou menos na hora que estávamos chegando lá. Eu ainda encontrei um pouco de céu azul aqui e ali, mas a neblina me desapontou um pouco.       **[EN]** After sometime in the cave, and since it got crowded, we decided to walk out and explore the tide pools. These are pools of water in the rocks that are left from the low tide and a lot of times they hold some sea creatures. We saw sea snails, anemones, crabs, small fishes, and there was even an octopus, but I couldn't snap a picture of it. And since we couldn't stay much longer because of the tide, we made our way back up the cliffs. **[PT-BR]** Depois de um tempo na caverna, e como ficou cheia de gente, nós resolvemos dar uma volta nas piscinas naturais. Estas piscinas se formam nas pedras quando a maré abaixa, e varias criaturas marinhas ficam ali até a maré subir novamente. Nós conseguimos ver umas lesmas marinhas, anemonas, carangueijos, pequenos peixes e tinha até um polvo, mas eu não consegui uma foto dele.
