For the young men and women of Ontalis, there was nothing quite like the day the Pale Door opened. It wasn't that this event was a surprise, for the door had been opening every three years since... well, since as long as anyone could remember. Some speculated that the door existed before the city did, and like clockwork, every three years... it would open.

For all intents and purposes, The Pale Door was, the single greatest opportunity for adventure that most people would have in their lifetime. While most entrances to the Infinite Staircase were shrouded in secrecy or next to impossible to access by common folk, this single door was a rare exception to the rule.

Hadrial's grandmother had once journeyed through the door. Though it took her nearly fifteen years to return home... the tales of adventure and wonder she brought back with her were enough to set a Hadrial's young mind aflame with possibility.

Her mother and father, however, were of different minds. "We know enough," they'd bark whenever she brought up following in her grandmother's footsteps. "No child of ours is going through that damned gate. What you learn out there will corrupt you!" 

Well, she'd show them. She'd just turned 21 three days prior, spent the three gold she'd saved throughout her young life on equipment and food, and met up with her four co-conspirators.

"Everyone ready?" she asked. 

They all exchanged nervous but excited, glances. As one, they grinned and nodded. As soon as the door cracked open, the group lept forward, diving through the threshold of swirling colours.
