At the University of Merida, Venezuela, there is a group of students who are very close, among them: Karla, Rosiris, Carlos, Nelson and Pedro. Karla is a very beautiful young woman, with eyes as blue as the waters of the sea, her hair as yellow as an Oralia, slender, and very affectionate, all her friends want to conquer her. Rosiris is the opposite: dark complexion, hair as black as coal mines, medium height, eyes as sharp as a cat's and conceited. Carlos is ugly, very studious, polite, and affectionate. Nelson is very studious, and obnoxious because he has his athletic body and is quite handsome. Pedro is a very handsome gentleman, tall, and careless with his personality.

 In their free time this group of friends usually go out to the green areas of the university to play Truco. Under some very leafy trees they sit on some concrete seats and place the cards on a table made of the same material as the seats.

At the moment of starting the truco game, the three young people pretend that Karla is their teammate in that game, but as they say in my town, “Karla is the bait”, (Bait, is a material that is used in a trap or catch an animal or person). In the middle of this situation, Rosiris, has an idea to solve this problem: she takes four matches and cuts one of them at one end so that it is shorter than the others, then she holds them with her hand so that they all look the same size. In a short time she leaves her hiding place, with great excitement she says: “”Potato, potato, open, every open, goat's foot! “”‘’, the young girl adds: “Come closer to take your match, the one who takes the smallest, will have Karla as a partner in the team of the game”.

 Nelson gets up and walks towards Rosiris with the matches in her hand; the young man begins to approach cautiously, he finally managed to get there, his hands were shaking like the leaves of the trees in times of gale, as he could he pulled a match, but it was not the shortest one, very desperate from his mouth came a cry: "It can't be! On his face a rictus of bitterness was drawn.

Then it was Carlos' turn, he was walking very serene. When he arrived in front of the young woman holding the matches, he pulled one out with a firm hand to his  surprise. He was not the short one, very disconcerted, with a very opaque voice, he added: “”". In life you have to know how to lose.“” He turned and walked back to his seat.

Now it was Pedro's turn. The young woman holds only two matches in her hand, Pedro, all disheveled, goes to meet the hand that holds them, when he stands in front of Rosiris and pulls the match, he takes out the shortest one, his eyes open as wide as those of an owl, full of happiness he sighs and utters a phrase: “Karla is my teammate”.

 
One rainy morning, Karla did not attend the University, the three friends were very sad. Rosiris told them: “Cheer up, nothing has happened to Karla,” Carlos replied: “I have faith in God that she will soon return, safe and sound”. In unison, a smile spread across everyone's face.

The following week, Karla appeared very cheerful, and told them, “I was unable to attend the previous days, due to a cold.” Her friends hugged her happily.  Then they left for the classroom.

As the months went by, the friendship between the friends grew stronger, but Nelson could not hide the love he felt for Karla. Several days passed and the month of festivities, Carnival, arrived. On the first Friday of that month in Venezuela, carnival is celebrated in all the institutions of initial, secondary and higher education. On that day, the University set up a stage for a rock concert. The five students were present at the event. At 6 o'clock in the afternoon the Rock group was already on the stage, starting their first melodies.

The five young men stood in front of the stage, Nelson took Karla by the hand and asked her to dance, she moves her body to the sound of the music, Nelson is ecstatic to see such beauty, he can not contain himself and steals a kiss, she is very angry and slaps him, the young man realizes that this girl does not like him. He leaves her alone on the dance floor, a moment that Carlos takes advantage of to ask her to dance. She, very happy, accepts to dance all night long. Meanwhile, Rosiris dances with Pedro, because Nelson left. At dawn they said goodbye and each one went home. 

At the end of the semester they decided to have the end of the school year party at Carlos' house, since his parents were away on vacation; he also collaborated with the sodas and soft drinks. Karla brought pea croquettes, Nelson brought a bottle of whiskey, Pedro brought a culinary dish of Pollo a la jardinera and Rosiris brought the pasa palos.

At seven o'clock at night, the reception began, everything was in harmony, they turned on the sound system to start dancing, of the three friends, two wanted to dance with Karla, and there was an argument between Carlos and Pedro, to end this discussion Nelson took several straws out of his pants pocket and turned his back to those present, he took four of those straws and cut one smaller than the other three. When he turned to his friends, he told them: “In my hand I have these four straws, the one who pulls the shortest one will be the one who will dance with Karla”.

Carlos got up in a hurry and went to Nelson who was holding the straws in his hand, very balanced he pulled a straw and it was the shortest, he was paralyzed with emotion, he felt his heart beating fast like the horses' hooves in a competition, he could not say a word, in seconds he reacted, turning to Karla he held out his hand and asked: “Shall we dance?” With a smile on her lips, the young lady answered:“” Yes! “When he took her hands Carlos felt them trembling and cold as an ice floe, when he placed his hand on her waist, and they began to dance to the melody, he felt Karla's breathing accelerated, he closed his eyes, breathed deeply and very quietly in her ear he said: ”I have always loved you, would you mind if you were my girlfriend?“, very excited the young woman replied: ”Yes, because I have always loved you silently! They sealed their love for each other with a kiss, .and all their friends applauded very happily.

Jugando al azar

En la Universidad de Mérida, Venezuela, hay un grupo de estudiantes muy unidos, entre ellos: Karla, Rosiris, Carlos, Nelson y Pedro. Karla es una joven muy hermosa, con ojos azules como las aguas del mar, su cabello amarillo como una Oralia, delgada, y muy cariñosa, todos sus amigos quieren conquistarla. Rosiris es todo lo contrario: tez morena, pelo negro como las minas de carbón, estatura media, ojos zarpados como los de un gato y presumida. Carlos es feo, muy estudioso, educado y cariñoso. Nelson es muy estudioso, y odioso porque tiene su cuerpo atlético y es bastante guapo. Pedro es un caballero muy guapo, alto, y descuidado con su personalidad.

 En su tiempo libre este grupo de amigos suele salir a las áreas verdes de la universidad a jugar Truco. Bajo unos árboles muy frondosos se sientan en unos asientos de cemento y colocan las cartas sobre una mesa del mismo material que los asientos.

Al momento de iniciar el juego de truco, los tres jóvenes pretenden que Karla sea su compañera en dicho juego, pero como dicen en mi pueblo, «Karla es la carnada», (Carnada, es un material que se utiliza en una trampa para atrapar a un animal o persona). En medio de esta situación, Rosiris, tiene una idea para solucionar este problema: toma cuatro fósforos y corta uno de ellos en un extremo para que sea más corto que los otros, luego los sostiene con su mano para que todos parezcan del mismo tamaño. En poco tiempo sale de su escondite, con gran excitación dice: «»¡Patata, patata, abierta, toda abierta, pata de cabra! «», añade la joven: «Acércate a tomar tu fósforo, el que tome el más pequeño, tendrá a Karla como compañera en el equipo del juego».

 Nelson se levanta y camina hacia Rosiris que tiene  los fósforos en la mano, el joven comienza a acercarse cautelosamente, por fin logró llegar, sus manos temblaban como las hojas de los árboles en tiempos de vendaval, como pudo sacó un fósforo, pero no era el más corto, muy desesperado de su boca salió un grito: "¡No puede ser!" En su rostro se dibujó un rictus de amargura.

Luego fue el turno de Carlos, que caminaba muy sereno. Cuando llegó frente a la joven que sostenía las cerillas, sacó una con mano firme para sorpresa de él. No era el bajito, muy desconcertado, con voz muy opaca, añadió: «»". En la vida hay que saber perder«». Se dio la vuelta y volvió a su asiento.

Ahora era el turno de Pedro. La joven sólo tiene dos cerillos en la mano, Pedro, todo despeinado, va al encuentro de la mano que los sostiene, cuando se para frente a Rosiris y jala el cerillo, saca el más corto, sus ojos se abren tanto como los de un búho, lleno de felicidad suspira y pronuncia una frase: «Karla es mi compañera de equipo».

Una mañana lluviosa, Karla no asistió a la Universidad, los tres amigos estaban muy tristes. Rosiris les dijo: «Anímate, a Karla no le ha pasado nada», Carlos respondió: «Tengo fe en Dios de que pronto regresará, sana y salva». Al unísono, una sonrisa se dibujó en el rostro de todos.

A la semana siguiente, Karla apareció muy alegre, y les dijo: «No pude asistir los días anteriores, debido a un resfriado». Sus amigos la abrazaron felices.  Luego se marcharon a clase.

A medida que pasaban los meses, la amistad entre los amigos se hacía más fuerte, pero Nelson no podía ocultar el amor que sentía por Karla. Pasaron varios días y llegó el mes de las fiestas, el Carnaval. El primer viernes de ese mes en Venezuela se celebra el carnaval en todas las instituciones de educación inicial, media y superior. Ese día, la Universidad montó un escenario para un concierto de rock. Los cinco estudiantes estuvieron presentes en el evento. A las 6 de la tarde el grupo de Rock ya estaba en el escenario, comenzando sus primeras melodías.

Los cinco jóvenes se paran frente al escenario, Nelson toma de la mano a Karla y la saca a bailar, ella mueve su cuerpo al son de la música, Nelson queda extasiado al ver tanta belleza, no puede contenerse y le roba un beso, ella se enoja mucho y lo abofetea, el joven se da cuenta que esa chica no le gusta. La deja sola en la pista de baile, momento que aprovecha Carlos para sacarla a bailar. Ella, muy contenta, acepta bailar toda la noche. Mientras tanto, Rosiris baila con Pedro, porque Nelson se fue. Al amanecer se despidieron y cada uno se fue a su casa.

Al final del semestre decidieron hacer la fiesta de fin de curso en casa de Carlos, ya que sus padres estaban de vacaciones; él también colaboró con las gaseosas y refrescos. Karla llevó croquetas de chícharo, Nelson una botella de whisky, Pedro un platillo culinario de Pollo a la jardinera y Rosiris los pasa palos.

A las siete de la noche, comenzó la recepción, todo estaba en armonía, encendieron el equipo de sonido para comenzar a bailar, de los tres amigos, dos querían bailar con Karla, y se presentó una discusión entre Carlos y Pedro, para terminar con esta discusión Nelson sacó varias pajitas del bolsillo de su pantalón se volteó de espaldas a los presentes, tomó cuatro de esas pajitas y cortó una más pequeña que las otras tres. Cuando se  dirigió  hacia sus amigos,  les comunicó: “En mi mano tengo estas cuatro pajitas, el que hale la más corta será el que bailará con Karla”.  

Carlos se levantó apresuradamente y se dirigió hasta Nelson que sostenía en su mano las pajitas, muy equilibrado haló una pajita y fue la más corta, de la emoción quedó paralizado, sentía que su corazón latía aceleradamente como los cascos de los caballos en una competencia, no podía emitir palabras, en segundos reaccionó, dirigiéndose a Karla le tendió su mano y preguntó: “¿Bailamos?” Con una sonrisa dibujada en sus labios, la joven respondió:“” ¡Sí!“”. ¿Al tomarle sus manos Carlos las sintió temblorosas y frías como un témpano de hielo, cuando él colocó su mano en su cintura, y comenzaron a bailar al son de la melodía, él  sintió la respiración de Karla acelerada, él cerró los ojos, respiró profundamente y muy quedo al oído le dijo :“”Siempre te he amado, te importaría si fueras mi novia?“”, muy emocionada la joven respondió: “¡Sí, porque  siempre te he amado en silencio!”. Se sellaron su amor con un beso muy apasionado y todos sus amigos aplaudieron muy felices.
