 NFTs seem to be all the rage. Those of us in the crypto space have been aware of them for some time now but for others, it seems like they just exploded into existence in 2021. Meanwhile, games like Splinterlands have been using them since it launched. Most people think of NFTs as digital art. Some of which people will spend a lot of money to buy. Many find it very hard to wrap their head around why on earth someone would spend that kind of money for an image that they can just right-click and save as, boom, it’s their’s. Well, a copy is theirs. Just like if you forged a copy of an artist’s work. It makes a copy of the work yours. Buying an NFT of an artist’s work is like going to an art gallery and buying their work except instead of the work to hang on their wall, they have a digital version to store in a crypto wallet. They can display the picture digitally and be able to prove they bought it as an original. That is where the similarity with an art gallery ends. When you purchase a painting from the art gallery, the artist gets their share and the piece now belongs to the purchaser. The artist will not see income from it again. It can change hands and grow in value as demand for it grows. When you purchase an NFT the artist is able to retain rights to a commission on each future sale of the NFT indefinitely. The artist can also program the NFT to be able to add perks at the time of sale or in the future giving the artist a way of connecting with a community of fans. Every NFT is unique, one-of-a-kind digital item stored on a blockchain ledger which is publicly viewable. This makes the tracing of ownership very easy and they can easily be transferred from one party to another but not easily counterfeited. With the ability to program various actions into NFTs ecosystems can develop where a series of NFTs can do things like give ownership in online communities that can expand and grow to add more assets to the ecosystem. In metaverse environments custom personal avatars can be purchased. As interoperability improves between metaverses people will be able to have their unique personnas move from one to another. The NFT value proposition grows with the value offered or added to NFTs. Emerging techs will enable blending NFT ownership with offline uses like for example attaching an NFT to a restaurant reservation or a venue ticket. Being able to add perks and value to the NFT gives value and the purchaser can either enjoy the added perks or sell it to someone else. Like cryptocurrencies, while NFTs fulfill a role and solve a problem they will have value to the end user. The Metaverse conference I was recently able to attend thanks to a ticket won from @hiveio had an NFT attached. When I claimed the NFT and connected it to my wallet, I was first able to access a discord. This past weekend I was able to use the NFT to gain access to a channel for the NFT holders in the discord. The admin tells us that there are more perks being planned for those in that channel. On Monday, I got an email giving me access to a code for a ticket for their next conference in January on Web 3.0. Already that NFT has gained in value.
