>*Witnesses sign and add blocks to the blockchain. Which means;
The 'transactions' are the blocks, and  are processed in rounds of 63 seconds each. 
Every round have 21 witnesses that have been  picked to sign the blocks and have 3 seconds to sign that block. 
Every  20 witnesses are the top picked once AND 1 witness among the rest (the Backup Witnesses). Backup Witness is picked in the round by random setting, based on their ranking, the higher they rank the more likely they are to be selected.
System generates  steem tokens that are split into 3 pools. And 10%, 1 of the pools are given to the selected witnesses as payment.
Summing it up, it is importenet to pick your witness/ess*.
