Abandoned North. Part #3: Soul-Sucking Sawmill
Today we will visit another abandoned place in the far, far northern lands. And if earlier, I tried to find something interesting or even beautiful in the local ruins, then this time I won't do it. Even my love for the north, for its nature, climate, people, cannot outweigh the depressing atmosphere created by our guest today. I decided to emphasize it in black and white pictures.

I happened to be here by accident, two years ago, and I hope I will never come back here again. The village with a very funny name Kuropta (means a place where there are a lot of partridges) is actually far from everything funny.

Like many settlements here, it was actively developed at the peak of the Soviet Union. It all started with an order to create a woodworking industry in the far north. And in 1949, the first 164 workers were seconded from the southern regions beyond the Arctic Circle. I think the first thing that oin they saw was this wooden building.

Since then, the sawmill has grown and expanded and turned into a whole factory that broke all records for the extraction and processing of wood. The Soviet government sought to create equal conditions for all workers, wherever they were, so the complex of buildings grew.

In those years, advanced equipment was used here and people had everything for convenient work. People were taken care of. Well, that's not the case now. A lot of rotted and damaged equipment, burned, broken. As if his former employees in anger sought to add destruction to this place.

For some reason, as in many other places, a lot of untouched reagents have been preserved. I don't know why this happens, not to say that these substances are in excess. Probably people do not risk touching them for fear of instability of substances. Or they just don't understand what all this is for.

This factory is so remote and so ugly that even looters don't come here. The locals, to some extent, have already stolen what they wanted, and there is nothing to steal here. There is nowhere and no one to sell. Now only 90 people live in the village and they are pensioners, mostly.

The preserved infrastructure on the street makes an impression. The equipment seems to be just abandoned in working condition. It is not people, but nature that has brought her to such a state.

Some rooms have burned to the ground, and it is impossible to understand what was here before. This is ironic, because on almost every wall there are Soviet inscriptions "Do not smoke" - a reasonable warning if you harvest wood and treat it with chemicals.

At the same time, there are very cute elements, like these Christmas tree toys. I don't know why they're still intact. But I didn't want to take them with me as a souvenir. I think they were left here for a reason. Maybe some dark story is connected with them.

Not far from the factory there are residential buildings and a couple of houses of the military garrison. Well, this is normal, in those days soldiers were constantly at any enterprise, guarding strategic important objects from a possible threat posed by capitalist countries.

The workers themselves moved here with their families, and lived in standard houses. In fact, modern locals are not even the workers who came here in 1949, but their children and grandchildren. For whom there is no work left, no hope, nothing.

I heard that in 2019 it was decided to relocate all local residents and liquidate the village. But as far as I know, this has not happened yet. And it is unlikely to happen sometime. No one wants to waste extra money and time on this place and these people.

Why won't I ever come back here and couldn't find anything beautiful here? It's hard to explain, but this is one of the few places that seems to suck the energy out of you. In a remote forest, surrounded by several swamps, the midges from which actively celebrate summer. There is an atmosphere of despair in the air, not even because people have left it, but on the contrary, that people continue to stay here. I don't know why, they just exist here, and they can't leave, or they don't want to do it. But I think it's the same thing for them…
