Carbon capture technologies exist and are being developed to reduce the human impact we have on the planet by creating carbon dioxide. Currently, industry and individuals contribute to the global CO2 emissions that have increased to 31.5 Gt. The CO2 concentration in air has increased to 412.5 PPM, which is twice the level before the industrial revolution.

Carbon is naturally sequestered by biological and geological processes. Plants, the ocean, soil and rocks secure carbon from the atmosphere. When fuel is burned, carbon dioxide is released, among other chemicals, and this carbon dioxide can contribute to climate change. CO2 is an important greenhouse gas, but is among a number of gasses including methane and water vapor that can reflect infrared radiation and keep heat close to the Earth. The ocean naturally absorbs 25% of the CO2 released, and forests sequester 25% of carbon emissions as well. Soils also absorb CO2 as water runs through them, and grasslands absorb and hold carbon in their roots. Despite these natural sources of carbon sequestration, we are in need of even more capacity.

Large companies including ExxonMobil are investing in carbon sequestration technologies that remove CO2 from the air through various methods. Initiatives exist to plant more trees, like the 1-trillion tree trees campaign, but more is needed. Currently, carbon emissions are stored deep underground after emissions are routed through a solvent system and then through a heater that removes the CO2 gas. Other sequestration technologies concentrate the gas into solids that are similar to the natural limestone process in which CO2 is captured in nature. Source control, or a reduction of CO2 at the source from smokestacks and emissions points is a great place to start, and ultimately the processes that create CO2 from burning fossil fuels must cease.

Elon Musk has offered a $100 million prize for the best carbon capture technology. May the best person win. The future of CO2 and pollution control will likely come from an energy source substitution when we move to nuclear energy sources and a portfolio of renewable energies.
